I'll bet it's slimy to the touch. Looks like a sponge of some sort. And in competition for space with the zoos. They will be okay, as someone else stated, the zoos will soon spread and spread... the sponge/tunicate? will help them to do so.

I can't really give you a concise answer. As I've known people to keep them all in full blown Reef tanks: Puffers, Triggers, Angels (both pygmy and others), butterflies, normally destructive wrasses, so on so on. It depends on the fishes temperment. Even then, their temperment may change...

I agree with Eff on choice of skimmers. BUT, a closed loop system will eliminate water sounds. Putting in a sump opens up the way for rushing water to plague you. I'd go hang on with such a small tank. Being a closed loop, I am left to assume it's an SPS dominated tank with many returns...
