    Free 55g reef tank!

There is a skimmer with the tank, just a very basic one - 2 tubes, one with a wooden "Airstone" for micro bubbles, and the other just seems to blow air into the water. What would be the best type of skimmer to use? There is a heap of liverock with the tank (In my 30 gal tank ATM), would I be...

    Free 55g reef tank!

Yep, you read right, my father has spat the dummy with his tank and "Handed it down" to me! There are a few problems, however..... He bought the whole tank as a going concern about 18 months ago from his LFS, it was full of liverock, some corals, a breeding pair of Clowns, a yellow angel...

    feeding clown fry????

What do you feed them after they've hatched? My dad rang, he has eggs and doesn't know what to do with them! he set up a 10 gal tank with an airstone and water from the main tank. He was going to remove the rock with the eggs from the main tank and put them in the 10 gal so the babies don't get...

    Hair algae

My 40 gal tank has been up and running for about 4 months now, inhabitants are 2 O clowns, 2 chromis, 1 bta, 1 CC star and about 4 snails. I'm getting what I think is hair algae on my base rocks. I have around 30 lbs of LR (estimated), 2 powerheads, 1 HOB filter and a skimmer. Lighting is (I...

I have bubbles over the glass on my tank, too, but I've posted about it in another thread so as not to hijack this one

?? about supports on top of tank

I would do that with the ones already removed first, then when they are strong enough to support the tank I'd change over the one that's still there now. I reckon the tank needs all 3.

?? about supports on top of tank

All tanks down here are made out of all glass. For support they use a ledge that's about 1 inch wide and runs across the front and back of the tank, about 1 inch from the top of the glass. On top of that are glass supports that run from the front to the back, and are stuck to the top of these...

    Stocking questions

40 gal tank, 3' long, 18" deep and high, how many small fish can be kept in there? I have a bta, a cc star, 2 Occellaris clowns and 2 chromis, 4 small snails. Am I overstocked? Can I put in a few more snails or hermit crabs, to keep the sand stirred up and clean? I am getting brown spots on my...

    Clown Fish for the start?

That's an interesting question. In my very limited experience clowns seem to be fairly hardy in a relatively new tank. Damsels are a great tank starter, but they get very territorial and aggressive to new-comers. Plus they are hard to catch if you decide to take them out! I used 2 blue/green...

    Starfish ???

Thanks for the ID. I fed him a small peice of squid last night, he ate it ok. I'll keep him well fed so hopefully he won't eat my snails. Thanks again A footnote: It would be quite funny to watch, wouldn't it...a starfish chasing a snail around the tank! Things wouldn't happen real quick

    Starfish ???

I've got the starfish, my wife bought it from the lfs while I was at home, so I guess I've got it now, whether I like it or not! I don't know what breed it is, I've taken a pic to try and identify it...

What the! How do I read my glass hyrdrometer?

Jenny, it's me that's in Perth - I'm actually a Taswegian, but been here 6 years now. Lived in Vic for a while too. I must confess I'm not too upset about Lleyton losing....I think He's full of himself lol Don't rush things too much trying to get the salt level back - try and do it slowly, s/w...

    questions from a newby

I've found that the most interesting thing about a s/w tank is the liverock, and all the hitchhikers you get on it. Get plenty of it, and lay it out in a good formation, put a red filter over your lights at night, eg red cellophane, and turn out your room lights and watch your tank. You will...
