I'm thinking of buying a dolphin DP-800 to run my SCWD on a closed loop. Good idea or no?? what do you use, why, and would you use it again?

    VHO or PC?

Right now i'm running MH w/ PC. Before it was purely PC and because of the depth of my tank it was hard to keep corals that required more intense light. VHO give you more watts per bulb than PC.

    m/h......different bulbs?

you'll get into a whole new ball of wax with the overlighting topic...many more opinions to be had but 15 watts per gallon sounds like a lot. What couldn't you keep with that lighting, absolutely nothing i would guess. Anyone have any luck with the icecap VHO ballasts? I love my icecap Mh...

    Getting rid of cyanobacteria

I had this same problem and erethromyacin, i know i butchered that spelling, took care of it too...but as posted before it is only a temporary fix, different water change habits and more flow kept it away.:D

    Who cleans your back glass?

I keep the algea along the all sides in check, only due to the fact there are no snails to do it for me!

    m/h......different bulbs?

Beach, that was my thought as well...just wanted to know if somebody actually does it....I still dont know if i should supplement with VHO actincs or stay with the PC...it sounds as if the VHO would be the way to go but that raises more questions such as the ballasts people have had success with...

    m/h......different bulbs?

wow NAS, if that is true than by adding true actinics it should be noticable. Maybe another XM with higher wattage actinics.....

    m/h......different bulbs?

Beach, from what i've read the 10K dont nessecarily need supplementation, it's just preference. My preference is more towards blue and i will be adding supplementation. Either my PC's of 110watts or buying VHO for 200 watts. cant hurt to add more actinic, just dont know if i want the other bulb...

    m/h......different bulbs?

NAS, I was wondering if anyone did such a thing too. My XM is more white/slight yellow than i bargined for, i'm hoping the atinics could balance the effect if i go with another XM

    m/h......different bulbs?

My 10K XM is white, but not the blueish I want. I will supply additional actinics by way of PC's(about 110Watts worth). I dont know if i should go VHO acitincs instead of my PC's, would it put off a noticibly bluer hue???

    m/h......different bulbs?

I've got my 2 250 watt MH's set-up and was wanting to run a higher K on one ballast than the 10K XM I have the other. Any one else run different Kelvin bulbs like this and if so what K could you recommend so the difference is not drastic? Thanks for the input!

Fan direction question for a DIY hood..

I just finished a DIY canopy(with an open back to encourage more air flow) to mount my MH's in. Two fans on the side draw air in while a slightly larger fan on top suck air out. This has worked great. I know it has been suggested but it has worked for me! My 2 cents. HTH

    Lighting?

I"ll keep you posted. I'm running one 10K XM which i like but i'm going to buy a coralvue 12K to compare it to. I'll let you know but i'll say one thing, its a world of difference between my MH and PC

    MH question

From what i've read on this board most people dont believe in MH lighting on tanks under 55 gallons. This will cause heat problems due to the relatively low amount of water. The ballast, in order to help the heat diffusion, are better off placed away from the tank so excess heat cannot build up...

    Lighting

Depends on what kind of organisims you want to support, just the anemone or other corals. Another factor is how deep the tank is. Most people recommend metal halides because with these you can support a huge array of corals including anemones and clams. HTH

    Lighting?

Emanon, I have had the same question for a long time. I decided to go with 2 250 watt metal halide lamps with 2 55 watt power compact atinics on an 85 gallon. I will use 10K bulbs as my metal halide bulbs which give you a whitish look while the power compacts will add a blue tint. Do a search on...

    Electronic Ballasts

If i were to run an XM 10K on my 250 icecap would it tend to underdrive the bulb making it appear more yellow? I'm going for a white to white/blue look. So many rookie questions to be answered!:nervous:

    Electronic Ballasts

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm going to purchase ballast that specifically say 'new version' so I believe they will be the ideal ballast for my job. Thanks again!

    Electronic Ballasts

thanks for the replygregvabch! I've heard so many good things about electronic balllasts and icecap in particular and want to know if anyone uses other brands or electronic ballasts and if anybody has had problems with the icecap.

    Electronic Ballasts

After much debate and reading a ton of threads I belive that I will get two Icecap 250 MH ballasts with mogul bases. These can fire any bulbs right and should be better in the long run? Anyone have a positive or negative experience with these? Thanks for the help this board has been productive...
