    home depot sand

I have been using the quickcrete sterilized play sand for about two years now. I had it in my shark tank a year back. Worked great and had no problems whatsoever. Then I had to move and broke the tank down and took the shark to a local aquarium. Don't be afraid to use it. People don't know...

    Live Sand experts needed!!

A deep sand bed should be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. No need to vaccum, just get some sand sifters. There's a really nice burrowing star fish out there in the market that does a great job. Some Blennies do and gobbies are great. As in lbs? Not sure really but I have a 55 gallon and I used...

Needing an Overflow for my sump

Hey gang-I'm trying to put together a sump for under my 55 gallon FOWLR. I am going to go get like a 20 gal tank for underneath. I want to house my skimmer, heater and a bunch of live rock. I need an over flow and don't understand the whole concept. What overflow should I get (how many GPH...

5-1/2 Gallon with two small Damsels

Wings-Damsels are hardy fish, but to get the most out of them, I'd go get some saltwater flake food. A lot of foods out there for fresh or salt water lack minerals in each. Fresh is for fresh and salt is for salt. Not in all cases I'm sure, but to be on the safe side, I'd go get some flake...

TO REPLACE OR NOT, THAT IS THE QUESTION

In my opinion-Cleaner Wrasses are tough fish to keep alive inthe home aquaria. As far as they say about cleaning parasited off of fish, yeah they do it ritually in the wild, but in home aquaria is very seldom. They're tough to keep around. I'd ex the idea and get another fish the same size...

5-1/2 Gallon with two small Damsels

Wings-Good to hear! I have a ten gallon mini reef and it's flourishing. All these books saying that it can't be done. Plus I have a maroon clown and blue damsel in my ten and they're fine. When the frozen food goes in the tank, with plankton for my corals, they fight over the bigger pieces...

turn off lights and filters during feeding?

Leave as is. If anything if you have the capability to turn down your filters, then do so. Lights? No, man. Leave'em on. Somefish get spooked when the lights go down and go to there neutral corners. You could throw them off a little. peace doug

    Southdown sand

Elizabeth-I myself have been using sand from home depot. I am using Quickcrete. Only a very small portion to make up for some others. I used 40 lbs of Nature's Ocean and about 10 lbs of Quickcrete sand. I'm not sure of the exact name of the top of my head. I used it as a mixture and it's...

    green spheres?

Sammy-Well obviusly the best technique would be to take the rock out of the tank and take care of it that way so it doesn't infest the rest of the tank. But if you take time and effort and money for that matter, to take your rock work apart might not be too beneficial. If the rock is easily...

    Help?!?!?!?!

Here's what I did. I had a couple fish in my tank when I did this: In my 55gal I had crushed coral. I vaccumed it to get out all of the dirty mess. Then took fiber glass screening and laid it on top of the crushed coral. That way it won't flow into my sand. Went to Home Depot and bought a...

    Green Chomis, How many???

It's not necessary. You'll be okay. My opinion, take it as a loss and get a different fish around the same size. Variety! peace doug

    Maroon Clown

Not always true. I have two maroon's in my tank. I got one to cycle it and two month's later I got another one. I bought a larger one the second time around. I wanted to pair them off and it actually worked. You can always try it and if your lfs is good and you tell them your situation...

    ls with cc

Krusty-Hey everybody! Sorry, Simpson's quote for those of you who don't know. Anyway, Krusty-what I did and it works great and is actually very beneficial is this. For two years I had crushed coral in my tank. I broke my tank down and made a little ten gallon mini. After moving everything...

    What do you use?

LionGirl-Here's what I have on my tank bottom. I have about an 1 1/2 of c.c. to 2 inches of c.c. I went to Home Depot and bought Fiberglass screening, kinda like what's on a screen door. No metal though, fiberglass very important. Put that on top of my crushed coral to seperate my two...

    Fish dying, bad live rock?

Jules-Hawks are pretty hardy. Not as much as clowns, but if they are okay now you should be okay. Just get that test kit and do a couple water changes. I do about 10% every other week. If you are having fish dying on you though, I'd try to do it every week if possible. Good luck. peace doug

    Fish dying, bad live rock?

Jules-Bad rock smells fishy. Good rock smells like the ocean. You'd definitely know the difference.

    Fish dying, bad live rock?

Jules-It may also depend on how much live rock you put in your tank at one time. If it's a large amount there may have been I Nitrate increase. Anytime you add live rock your Nitrate most likely will increase. Although it's not as toxic as ammonia to fish but it still may cause some stress...
