what kind of skimmer is it? it sounjds oike a venturi skimmer - that is when they use a pump to push both the air bubbles and the water into the skimmer. Without the air bubbles (if you plugged the top) the skimmer wouldn;t be doing much - you may as well wait until you can get back to the LFS...
