    Q-tips are ok, they are filter feeders. Can the favites be fragged? cause only the bottom portion of the rock is still laive, the rest is taken over by mushrooms.

    look in the hitchhikers id forum, under snails. more specifically Vermetid Snails. the things you see are their mucus "nets" they are harmless but they can get annoying when their nets get big.
