has anyone ever created a planted saltwater tank?

Hi, Unlike corals, macros don't need fancy lighting, a T5HO would do nicely. They do grow, and if you don't prune and remove them, (called harvesting) they will overgrow the tank. The red macros seem to me to grow the slowest. They feed on nitrates and phosphates (ammonia and nitrite too), the...

new to the saltwater hobby and have a million questions

I think all you have to do to kill everything living in the rock is soak the rock in freshwater (RO: reverse osmosis) The tub will actually turn to saltwater because of what is in the rocks, so you may need to soak it for a day, and then dump the water and refill the tub and let it soak some...

has anyone ever created a planted saltwater tank?

Hello, There is a difference between keeping decorative macroalgae, and a planted saltwater tank. I have done both. I love macroalgae, it keep the tanks water pristine. Now for the planted tank story: To have a planted tank, I needed a deep sand bed, and I used miracle layered under the sand...

I would start over too. The equipment, filters, power heads and such are all very corroded. Get a couple of gallons of vinegar and soak everything after you clean it manually as much as possible. Place stuff in buckets and pure fresh water over it, and dump the vinegar in, everything will look...

new to the saltwater hobby and have a million questions

Hi, Welcome to the site. You need a good beginners book, that will answer some questions, and stimulate you to ask the right ones as you go along. Also, for the sake of those of us trying to help you... separating the paragraphs make your post easier to read. Now for what you posted. The...

    High Ammonia

I have moved many times over the years, and the only critter I ever lost was a single cleaner shrimp. My post is a warning for those MOVING their tanks. It isn't the time to clean stuff up, keeping everything as close to what it was before breakdown is imperative. After everything has been...

    High Ammonia

Hi, If I understand what you wrote...you moved an established tank...but changed the sand... Temps didn't cause your ammonia spike, nor hurt your rocks. The corals may not be happy but should be able to bounce back. I don't think moving in cold weather caused your problems at all. This is what...

    High Salinity

It's marked with a safe zone... If you are worried about it, take it to the LFS and let them do a reading on their tanks with it to make sure it's reading correctly. I used an hydrometer for 10 years before I even knew there was such a thing as a refractometer. The simple truth is that unless...

    High Salinity

Actually after a very short time the level of the water is marked by the water. That being said, in the beginning I used a piece of tape to mark my level...later I just knew it. Hypo MUST NOT be done unless you have a refractometer, it's really the only time you absolutely need one. As long as...

    what size refugium is ideal...

Hi, A refugium does not have to be large, the critters you want to cultivate does not take up much room...even a 5g tank makes a good refugium. I used a little in tank refugium from CPR, and it worked great. They also have HOB refugiums...all under a gallon and all worked awesome. A sump system...

    High Salinity

Hi, First you need a refactometer, it's more accurate. For now: To get back on track, remove just a bit of your tank water and add fresh RO water (reverse osmosis) giving time between to circulate the new water and retest the SG. Basically all you are doing is a bigger version of acclimation...

    Xenia Coral

Just noticed your post...sorry. Turn the rock to it's side with the fleshy part a exposed a little more, the xenia will climb toward the light, even a tiny bit of flesh will start a new colony. Actually they really like bright light, and will climb toward it, I used to turn my rock so it would...

    What's Base rock

I was told about this, and it works. Put live rock in a tub with really high salinity, the critters in the rock will all come out, and you can remove anything you don't want. You will have to be right there and ready, after just a minute or so they all go back into the rock to hide.

A critter that actually eats Cyanobacteria

I checked it out, it's just an online store, and not for even aquarium stuff...shirts and junk... I didn't see anything useful, why did you want me to look at it? I didn't see a thing about bat stars, I even searched the site for something about bat stars...it offered me starfish shaped jewelry

    What's Base rock

Agreed, but it isn't that they were just given fancy names...Any saltwater rock that is dried out...is base rock. People call it that because it's usually placed on the bottom of the tank and the live rock (closer to the lights) on top of them. All rock will seed from the live rocks, and...

Been wanting to ask this for years

My fish, coral and inverts always act exactly the same from day to day, the shy fish is always shy, the bully is the bully and the food hog does his thing. They established their territory (anemone is the exception, it would move and upset everything else) so they are always in the same area of...

    Tank Moved

Mine wasn't loud either, just the steady sound of running water...LOL..I have heard some that sounded like a water buffalo was drowning. Some people don't want to hear anything at all, so I mentioned the canister. Most who go with a sump system wouldn't want it any other way. You should post...

    Tank Moved

Sumps are loud, usually just the constant sound of running water...In case your fix doesn't work, and you desire silence, switch to a canister. You lose the extra water volume, but gain quiet, you won't even know it's running. I personally like the running water sound, but it isn't for everyone.

A critter that actually eats Cyanobacteria

I have not had cyano in the 90g now for many years. I have a bunch of macros in the tank since I can't do regular water changes anymore. Thing is, I lost all the seahorses over the past few years and only one was left...even the half chunk of frozen Mysis was polluting the tank since all that's...

Hi, Stress coat is to help injured fish...a water change should not injure your fish, adding this is just a waste of money and slimming up your tank for nothing.. Stress Zyme is for developing good bacteria...however, all tanks, once cycled, develops only enough good bacteria to balance with...
