you ever think about just getting out of it?

You can't count your critters! My goodness me...yes, you can spend a small fortune on nothing but corals. I was talking about salt mix for water changes, filter media and fish food...

I imagine if was allowed to be harvested by people with saltwater tanks, there wouldn't be a Great Barrier Reef for long.

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Now I understand... where you live makes all the difference doesn't it. On a 400g tank I bet it does get off the roof high in costs. LOL Mandy...Your only solution...come to America!

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Foster and Smith sells that very same salt brand...the most expensive by the way...for $72.00. Marine Depot sells this one for $69.99 (all of them make175g) Instant Ocean reef crystals they sell for $49.99 to make 200g a little more then I quoted, but way below what you pay. *****: Kordon coral...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

While there is no such thing as costing no money, it isn't a lot of money to maintain a tank (well depends on the size of said tank I guess). Media, salt mix, fish food and the cost of the RO water is about it. I buy master test kits, they last a good while, and only cost $30.00 to replace. Salt...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

I agree, after the original set up cost, a tank is very cheap to maintain. I spend hundreds on the dogs every month, in food, toys and medicines when they grow older...

    any computer geeks out there?

You can reset your computer to factory settings... half the time the updates cause me problems. I do back up my pictures and documents on Crash Plan (same as cloud). Sometimes it's just best to start over. You should have some kind of antivirus and firewall. The help the geeks give you isn't...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

There are very few folks I have found that like the cold... chillers are not cheap, but they are cheaper then the fancy lights for keeping a reef, there are even cold water corals (Pagoda cup for example). Check out the bat stars, they are gorgeously colored, even eats cyanobacteria, best CUC...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

I have a cold water salt tank... it is very different to stock, most critters and fish on sale are tropical.

you ever think about just getting out of it?

I agree, it's worth every penny. I am looking at getting out, I can't care for my tank like I want to. The bending, the pulling, the climbing the step ladder, I have made things as simple as possible...fish only (seahorses) not a reef, HOB filters, and macroalgae so I can fudge on water changes...

    Marine snow....

LOL, I'm lazy...I just left it alone, the "nasty" stuff really isn't all that bad for the tank, it won't do any damage...and the skimmer cleans it up real fast anyway, it will pull it right back out before it could even be noticed.

    New to site and question

Wow... I must admit I'm surprised by this. I won't tell anymore people they can't have UG filters because of the weight of the rocks.

    New to site and question

Hi, The only reason I ever found for not using an under gravel filter, is the sheer weight of the rock... I just have to ask, how did you manage to keep it in tact?

    First Order

Hi, I posted on your thread... See the top post...that's the norm. YOU also don't seem to realize that if a fish survives for over 14 days, YOU did something wrong on your end. If a fish arrives sick...it would not last more then a few days, let alone 3 days over 14. Things do sometimes happen...

    my shrimp is preggers!

Hi, LOL ...don't do anything. When the babies hatch, the shrimp and fish will have a feast. I was surprised that shrimp eat their own young, so as far as trying to "save" the babies, I have no idea. I always kind of hoped a few might survive ... Like in the wild and be in the rocks until they...

How often do I run my protein skimmer

It takes filter feeding corals a full day to feed. it's indeed true the skimmer will only remove what the corals don't consume...but you have to give the poor slow feeding corals time to do that. Most folks who run a skimmer 24/7 and only feed once a week, won't have fast growth on their corals...

How often do I run my protein skimmer

Hi, To be honest folks with reef tanks over skim, the skimmer pulls out the coral food you feed the tank. So if you have a reef and feed the tank once a week for the coral, I always turned off my skimmer for 24 hours after I fed them. Most do run it 24/7, just because it's a pain in the butt to...

has anyone ever created a planted saltwater tank?

That tank is long gone, I replaced it with the 56g years ago. The hairy crap I had in my tank was fed by the miracle mud, I will never put that in my tank again. Keeping low nutrients is the only way to fight it, but if you have that miracle mud junk in the tank, it has all the food it will ever...
