    New SW Aquarium 1st timer....troubles!!

Then what do you do with the freshwater molly? Personally, if I wanted freshwater fish, I wouldn't have decided to go with saltwater in the first place. Nobody needs to cycle a tank with a live fish...macros or not

    Carbon

LOL...You are so bad! I run carbon, and swap it out once a month too, out of habit mostly, since I no longer have my tank as a reef. I'm of the opinion, that when you have a reef it's a must, it prevents chemical warfare problems between the corals.

    Chiller?

There is still a wealth of knowledge, Bang Guy is still around and Snakeblitz is writing a book... I have an Artctica, and the AquaEuro both are the 1/10hp they work great...they do need to be back-flushed every 6 months. I also use a filter that I just put in front of the pump, the suction...

Sick dog??? Hope your pooch is okay, nothing worse then needing an emergency vet What can you do about a fish that takes frags to it's den? I have never heard of a fish doing that.

    New SW Aquarium 1st timer....troubles!!

Hi, The guy knew because he wanted you to cycle your tank with a live fish, the only way to keep it alive is to do a water change the moment you see a spike of ammonia...called a soft cycle. Nowadays we know you don't need a live fish to suffer just to cycle a new tank, a chunk of raw shrimp...

    New SW Aquarium 1st timer....troubles!!

Hi, Welcome to the site, and sorry for all the troubles... damsels are wicked little fish, in saltwater tanks what you add will dictate what you can add later. Damsels will kill any fish less timid then themselves, including each other. Like bang Guy said, the tank needs to cycle before adding...

    tank move or upgrade?

Upgrade isn't hard at all...the established rock and such means you don't have to wait for a cycle. The amount of good bacteria already matches what is in your tank. When I moved from Wisconsin to Illinois, I went from a 75g to a 90g...all moved in one day. Put wet saltwater paper towels over...

    Help needed.

Hopefully he will be able to add more fish...if these turn out to have a parasite or disease, he just contaminated the display by not using a quarantine first...Quarantine is not to make sure the new fish do not get a disease or parasite from the display, it's the other way around.

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Hi... I don't think I will lower the tank, for now anyway, I would have to break the whole thing down like I'm moving just to do that, which is much harder then climbing a step ladder. If I ever have to move the tank, I will consider doing that for sure. I may be replacing my carpet in a few...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

I did, and do use a hose and the utility pump to send the change water to the tank...I can't run a line to the mixing tub from the RO unit at the sink...My house is very small, that would block the door, or the dogs would get tangled in the line. The tub is directly across the kitchen from the...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Thanks for the idea... I'm not sure if I would want a tank that low, it is eye level as it is when I sit down, but I suppose I could get used to it, better then no tank at all. I will check online and see if I can find a picture where somebody has done that. Snake, I have to agree with you...

    New to Saltwater!

+1... It's the first thing I ever do when setting up a new tank. I would think it's heavier then 10lbs per gallon. Water alone in a 55g weighs 600lbs http://freshaquarium.about.com/od/aquariumsandstands/a/tanksizesweights.htm How many two story houses are built with reinforced concrete?

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Hi, I'm 5'5...the 90g tank top without the canopy is 52", my canopy isn't heavy, but it's bulky, so far I can still manage to remove that, and the lights are on a pulley system... I use a step ladder to reach into the tank to harvest the macros, that seem to really like the rockwork in the very...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Good to know, that's why I put a "just in case" anyone reading the post uses tap water, since I wasn't sure if you were saying you did or not. Like Snake said, it can be cleaned up if you don't top off with it, and just used it as a start up. Nothing worth doing, is done the easy or cheap way...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

I did daily water changes when the tank was in distress, back when I used it as a reef, just to get things back where they should be... What your saying makes a whole lot of sense. I miss my little thumbs up icon. Maybe I can figure out a way to keep my tank after all...if I can find a way to...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

My PO4 and NO3 is a beautiful fat 0.... macroalgae absorbs it to grow. I don't do regular water changes, maybe you shouldn't be so fast to judge others and say we shouldn't be in the hobby because we don't/can't do the same thing you do. Frankly I could be a jerk and say that you haven't ever...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Just in case anyone using tap water is reading this : You should not be using tap water for your fish tanks... not only does it contain inhibitors for the very bacteria we try to cultivate, sea life has no need for fluoride, just to name one thing you don't want in the tank... nuisance algae...

you ever think about just getting out of it?

I can no longer do regular water changes, the macros keep the tank going. Once in a blue moon I do manage a water change. The tank looks nothing like the glory days, but I can't even harvest the macros like it should be done. Still the critters seem happy and healthy enough...the only coral are...
