    Sump/fuge DIY

I would recommend you set up a test system in the garage or driveway and play with it to get all the adjustments and operation correct. Much better to have a woops there then over the carpet inside. adjustments: 1) no flood in power out. 2) no flood and normal operation returns when power...

    Problem with algea

algae and cyano are the results of nutrients, carbon dioxide and light. In order to prevent algae long term IMHO it is best to introduce things to consume the nutrients like macro algae or an algae turf scrubber. to start out the undesirables. Short term and assuming desirable algae is...

    Water Quality Question

I to am sorry for your loss. One thing to remember on Prime (and other ammonia locks) is to only dose for the free ammonia. Test kits like the api ammonia test kit actually measure both the free and safer "locked" ammonia. The danger is you add Prime still test ammonia and repeat. Each dose...

    sump overflow??

you might play with a couple of 10-20g containers in the garage until you are confident you got it figured out. Adjustments: 1) sump (lower container) does not flood with power out. 2) normal operation returns with power returns. and the one I forgot: 3) with drain failure (blockage/siphon...

Thinking of entering the SW obsession

As I understand you are moving a 90g tank. a gallon of saltwater is ~8.6 pounds. or about 775 pounds. Just for your consideration. Plus the tank and any stand will be ~300 pounds or so plus the rocks.

Ammonia NH3 Aquarium Alert Continuous Color Aquarium Water Test/Monitor Seachem Does it work?

Yes it does work. As an added bonus, it only reacts to the dangerous free ammonia. Unlike most test kits like the api liquid ammonia test kit which react to both free and locked ammonia. So it is entirely possible the kit would measure ammonia which is actually locked and you add chemicals to...

Thinking of entering the SW obsession

yep you will need lights. FWIW I would start the tank with macro algae (in a refugium) then do the rest. IMHO the simplest refugium is just using 1/4" sq plastic grid lighting diffusers (egg crate) to form a partition to separate the macros from the display area. I put one 3" in front of my...

    Added bulkheads to my tank

FWIW you should be able to adjust so there is no floods when 1) power out 2) power return 3) drain failure (siphon break/blockage) if not you need to redesign so those adjustments can be made. my .02

    Water Change Volume Question

if either don't take anything said on these forums as an insult or just ignore them anyway. And I'm a fan of yours as well. my point is for newbies to look at things other than water changes to help setup a more balanced and stable system as opposed to the water change fixes everything...
