The smaller the tank the harder to keep water parameters in check. You will need to feed the critters. I'm not sure if a power head will be needed since there will be no fish.

My tank and sump are in my garage. While it is heated and cooled it remains 80 degrees and evaporates very quickly since summer has hit. Do you think 10 gallons would be enough? I think I'm gonna take some notes and see how long I go without topping it off, and how lo g it takes to evaporate.

It is different with salt water. Just depends on the size of the fish you are looking at and how big will it get and how much waste will it produce.
