Planning Sump Room - Pump Questions

I use a Dolphin Aqua Seas 4500 in a similar set up. It pumps water to two tanks in the basement, two filter cylinders in my sump, and the display tank on the first floor. It has been running non-stop for two years with no problems. I plan on taking it apart and cleaning it once a year. My...

Running a chiller in the winter

I was thinking that you may run the risk of the water flowing into the chiller becoming too cold too fast and freezing which is the same reason why you should not go below the recomended flow rate. I had water freeze once in the chiller because the pump stopped running and the chiller kept...

Running a chiller in the winter

Yes it does, but why do they recomend that you don't run it if the air temp is below freezing (it's in the garage not in the room with my tank)?

Running a chiller in the winter

I have a 1/3 hp aqualogic in-line chiller running in my garage which is not heated. The directions say that I should not run the chiller if the air temp is below freezing. Does anyone know why this is? Can I unplug the chiller and just let the water run through it or should I disconnect it...

    Opinions on a pump....

I have been using two T4's for about a year now and am very happy with them. They are very quiet, so quiet you can't tell they are running unless you touch them. One major draw back to these pumps is that they run very hot and can raise your tank temperature a few degrees. If you already have...

    Foxface in a reef tank?

Cheaper and less risky, true... but my 6 emerald crabs hardly touch the stuff either.

    Foxface in a reef tank?

I added one to my tank about a month ago to help keep valonia in check. It does not pick at any of my corals and gets along great with my other fish, but I have yet to see it eat any bubble algea.

Anyone tried the Tunze Turbelle stream pumps in a reef?

I agree, great product. Go ahead and get one zanemoseley!

Anyone tried the Tunze Turbelle stream pumps in a reef?

I honestly don't know how the Red Sea wavemaker achieves soft start and I understand very little about the actual workings of the Tunze multicontroller, it is rather complicated. I do know that the Tunze controller is nothing like any other wavemaker I have seen, It sends the signals over 5...

Anyone tried the Tunze Turbelle stream pumps in a reef?

This is A quick explamation that roger posted on is Tunze forum; Nope- the electronic pump has a true soft start as we have full control of the motor and the rotational speed. In general soft start is BS as a coil is either energized sufficiently to drive the motor or it is not. But in the case...

Anyone tried the Tunze Turbelle stream pumps in a reef?

I agree that these pumps don’t cavitate and they do not suck in air unless too close to the surface, but I just want to point out to anyone considering these pumps; Roger Vitko from Tunze insists that using these pumps on any other wavemaker other than the Tunze Multi and Single controllers...

Anyone tried the Tunze Turbelle stream pumps in a reef?

The Streams can certainly be used as the only source of water movement; they move a lot of water in a very broad flow pattern with less velocity than standard power heads. The 6100 moves more than 3000 gph and I have seen them used in eight and ten foot tanks where the flow bounces off the...

Anyone tried the Tunze Turbelle stream pumps in a reef?

Whether or not a 6060 Stream will be too much flow for a four foot tank really depends on the type of corals you are keeping and more importantly the type of substrate you have. People using sugar fine sand have had a lot of trouble with these pumps producing sand storms. Larger grain sand...

Anyone tried the Tunze Turbelle stream pumps in a reef?

I've been using two 6000's in a 90 and I am very happy with them. I cannot run them at the same time without blowing sand everywhere, so I have the multicontroller set to alternate them. I would check out the Tunze forum on -- for more information.

i am confused about how strong my powerghead should be

JustinX Roger from Tunze has a message board on -- that you should check out if you want to learn more about the Stream pumps, there are many threads there regarding them. They started with two models back in November; The Tunze 6080 (2250 gph) and the Tunze 6100 (3175 gph) but found that they...

    Mushroom & Lighting Questions....

I have found that most of my mushrooms open up more in slightly shaded areas where they are 'reaching' for light. I run 2x250w MH and 2x110 VHO, and can't put them in direct light or they shrink up. Some of them have acutually moved into the shade on their own.

    RO/DI Advice

RO/DI units only require water preasure to run, no electricity is needed. They are hooked up to a fauset or directly into your plumbing. You can also attach the output to a float valve in your sump and use it for auto-top-off. You need a drain for the extra water to run into though.

i am confused about how strong my powerghead should be

Have you considered Tunze Stream pumps? They are very expensive and there is a considerable waiting list for them, but I cannot be happier with mine. IMO they are the closest you can come to natural wave motion right now and my corals LOVE them. The Streams move a ton of water (1600 to 3175...

    Help! I have Flatworm!

I would be a little hesitant to use the 'Flatworm Exit'. I have heard that it does a great job killing flatworms, but what else might it be killing? The flat worms may also return in droves and the toxin they release when they die can be a very big problem. I feel that it is better to use...

    Chiller Advise PLEASE ???

Marin, A 1/4 hp chiller uses a flow rate between 500 and 900 gph and a 1/3 hp uses 600 -1200 gph. I use a Velocity T4 running through 10 feet of 1" pvc on my 1/4 hp chiller. Dave
