A bio system not dependent on constant water changes.. Now that sounds like my sorta tank. Give me like a few years and I'll get there too!! Haha I just found out one of the other medical students on my ward has a tank! Yay we can discuss fish together hahahaha...

When I begin I should just do regular water chnges eh? I was thinking 10% biweekly. Or I should it better to chnge according to parameters?

    Sugar dose post cycle

Is it because I have no way of knowing if there is ammonia coming of the rocks anymore and thus I don't know if there is food left for the Bacteria in the first stage of the cycle?

Hmm yeah can't beat a matured system that's true. Oh I was joking about the algae quill, I know :) and yup I'm using RODI water! Make it myself

Hahahahaha what if I encourage an algae bloom in my tank and all the green hair algae will wipe those nitrates out!! Imagine the cleaning...

Maybe I'll set up my 10 gallon tank in the garage and test this sugar thing out. I'm interested...

Oh Joe I agree with you! Water changes will only mask the problem, the rocks will still leach until they're finished leaching. That's why I've been trying to think of ways to deal with nitrates without a water change. But yeah but I'll just wait until the nitrates stop rising. And then work...

Hahahaha. I see where Florida is coming from, just wait and see what happens. I'll do that for now :) if I do decide to muck around with sugar I'll let you know quills! I love science hahaha... oh by the way, Amonnia is 0, but since nitrates are rising and nitrites aren't falling I think there...

Ahh right But I need to wait till nitrates stop rising right? Otherwise a water change is just masking the problem and a week after adding fish I'll have like 60ppm nitrates again?

    Sugar dose post cycle

Oh right, my thought was with the excessively high 80ppm nitrates, why not just sugar dose to get rid of them. Then as you said may need to recycle the tank because you don't have the strong biological support. But that way you get rid of nitrates without a $150 of salt, and you then get a...

    new need info

Maybe ask the other members, but from my research I believe it's better to have either a really short one inch or less sand bed which is easy to siphon or a 5-6inch dsb, but not in between? A five would be cheap yet helpful to your tank in a few ways right?

Thanks for the advice guys :) And yeah it's still cycling the nitrites aren't coming down. But the nitrates are going crazy. They're up to 80ppm now and still climbing. At this rate I won't be adding any fish even if the cycle finishes until the nitrates stop climbing. Because if they keep...

I see My nitrates are 80ppm (cycling with dead rock) now. So I was thinking it would help a little bit in addition to water changes.

Is it likely to die off because the tank is still cycling and then release lots of nutrients into the water?

    new need info

When you say you have a tank, is it just an empty tank without equipment? And didn't you want advice on what you need? Or just asking about the fish?

    Macroalgae ID

Hey guys! Tank cycle is well, nitrites coming down now :) So I finally found a fellow hobbyist who gave me some macroalgae that someone sneaked over from somewhere. He gave me a whole bag of the first type, and a small clump of the second picture stuff. For the time being I've chucked them in...

So tempting to just throw a few spoons of sugar in the tank while it is cycling and there is no fish in there... But I shall control myself haha I got macroalgae

    Sugar dose post cycle

How much space do I need for the macroalgae? lol I was so eager to fill my sump with live rock and live rock rubble that I've only left 3-4cm of space. Will I need to empty a lot of this out? Oh well I'll move it to the return chamber. So yeah how much space do you keep?

Ok that's good :) as long as the clowns won't die. and I'll do frequent water changes at the beginning so that the nitrate slowly comes down. Yeah my ammonia is 0.25, nitrites >5ppm and nitrates 40ppm. Lol and this is after I acid cured my live rock hahahahaha. Awesome thanks for the advice :)...
