    Sugar dose post cycle

Ahh I see Ok thanks guys :) Yeah I was doing a bit of research it does seem to drop phosphates and nitrates. However you're right about the excess die off so it would only be safe to do it nearer the end of the cycle when there is already a stable population there. Hmm and then I guess I would...

    Sugar dose post cycle

Just some thinking. My cycling 100 gallon tank is spiking nitrites now. But the nitrates are already 20ppm, probably gonnna go much higher and it's probably due to my dead rock. Anyway just a question, post cycle, people often reccomend large water changes to drop those nitrates (which =$$$ in...

    Sump biomedia

THANk you everyone! My display is lacking lr anyway, so I put the rubble in and I'll give it a tumble whenever I do a water change to keep it clean

    Sump biomedia

Yeah that's what I thought! If water if constantly moving through it, and I have a skimmer before I didn't think they would become nitrate traps. But so many people on various forums say don't put live rock in sumps it's a nitrate trap. So I was a bit confused. And yeah my flow through the...

    Sump biomedia

I see so, you haven't really noticed any ill effects with detritus traps? From all the live rock rubble in your sump? I'm assuming the skimmer and filter sponges (yes I clean them bi-weekly) would stop a lot of this

    Ghost feeding

Thanks Bang Guy! I was so surprised, had no nitrite for 2 weeks and then all of a sudden within 2 days it went up to 5ppm (probably higher as this is the limit of the test kit).

    Sump biomedia

I am pointing to the chamber after the skimmer which contains a piece of rock. This has a lot of space around the rock and I want to add biomedia or live rock rubble here. You guys would be proud of me, I've kept all my wiring nice and tidy with drip loops and labels :)

    Sump biomedia

It is before the chamber containing the rock where I want to add biomedia. I shall post a picture in the next 10mins

    Sump biomedia

I should add, my main goals are providing increased biological filtration and attempting to have some form of nitrate export.

    Sump biomedia

Ok so I have some space in the sump. Considering I put 0.5 pounds of Rock Per gallon I reckon I need something in the sump. I have two big pieces of rock, but there's a lot of space around them. So the options are: 1)Live rock rubble: heard not as porous and detritus trap? 2) Biomedia: Seachem...

    Ghost feeding

We have frozen mysis, frozen brine shrimp at the pet store. Hmm I think the fishing stores sell krill maybe as bait

    Ghost feeding

I think in a few days I'll be ghost feeding to supply ammonia while my nitrites come down. What's the best food to ghost feed? I was thinking frozen is better than pellets, because frozen is less nutrient dense and so won't foul my tank with as many additional nutrients such as phosphates? I...

    Shipping stuff

I had to drive some fish for a friend once for 8 hours I used a polystyrene box with heat packs and the fish in breathable bags. Worked great. I waited for 25mins before starting to make sure the temp was stable and not too high which could kill them.

    Starting a macroalgae refugium

By the way I heard bout this cool thing called Xport NO3. Marine depot just posted a video of it on their YouTube channel. I am considering getting it, it seems incredible that one brick could do 1000 gallons filtration. I only have 100 gallons but I am considering getting it shipped from...

    Starting a macroalgae refugium

Ah yes I hear from about caulerpa going sexual. Some local people told me they use longer lighting periods and they have never had a problem with it going sexual. But I may choose to leave the caulerpa and try the other two first. Thanks 2quills! But I live in NZ and biosecurity would not let...

    Starting a macroalgae refugium

Thanks Do I wait till I read nitrates? Or wait till entire cycle is down and parameters are stable? Hmm wonder if I would need to stop my GFO...?

    Thank you guys!! Cycle time

Thank you :) Cycle is going well. Nitrite's starting to go up to 1ppm. Interesting thing is ammonia actually went a little higher from 0.5ppm to 1.0ppm. I guess the live rock die off is a constant ammonia source. Will diatoms only start once I start getting nitrates?

    Starting a macroalgae refugium

So it's difficult to get macroalgae here in NZ as it is illegal to sell but you can swap between people non-commercially. Now I've gotten hold of someone who has 3 types of macroalgae in his sump. He doesn't know what they are but one is red, one is green caulerpa and the other one is some...
