    Need to see the light!

Only live rock and fish? If that's the end goal then any lights will do in the colours you want which fit on your tank. If you want corals, then depending on the types of corals you want to keep (e.g soft or lps or sps), you should buy high end lights like LEDs (costlier initially but cheaper...

    Awesome thanks for that!

    Mixing saltwater with sand bed

Well guys I screwed up. Got a 400L tank plus sump. Leak tested it. Aquascaped. Added sand. Filled up with RODI water (that took days!!) And I was about to mix my salt until I read that mixing with a sandbed causes problems because salt sits there. Damn it... Any ideas? Don't wanna drain the...

    Help!! What is this?

The dechlorinator is great for removing chloride ions. But unfortunately it doesn't remove phosphates and nitrates which are often in city water supplies. Hence Beth is suggesting one possible issue is that there maybe excess nutrients coming from the tap water. Yeah it will turn live over...

    3 clown fish

Hahaha the clownfish was hiding in the sump for 4 months?? Can't believe it survived. Hey Jay, would it Be ok for them to leave the fish and only remove it if there is aggression? Or I would it be better to remove pre emptively?

    Stocking and feeding

Oh it's just the size and lighting intensity I believe. These are the santamonica commercial algae turf scrubbers. Haha changed my mind though will be trying a refugium first as cheaper.

    Stocking and feeding

Sweet I'll take out the chromis's and take out An angel. Which angel is harder to care for? I'll remove that one. Oh and lawnmower blenny, I'll need to wait till I have lots of algae?

    Stocking and feeding

Hey guys! So I've more carefully thought through the fish I want since I'm cycling. I've read up a bit on each fish and think these are appropriate for myself as a beginner and then as I gain experience. I plan on adding one fish every 1-2 months. Just to space out the budget and give the tank...

    Conservative cycling

Hey bang, so you keep ammonia under 0.5ppm. Is that only to keep live rock alive? Or to prevent crazy high nitrate levels post cycle? (I ask because I'm only adding live rock (like fresh from my LFS's tank this no die off) near the cycle end so no ammonia killing my organisms to worry about)...

    Conservative cycling

Thanks bang guy for the link and the ranges. Yeah you can add a tiny bit of salt. That's because chloride ions in the salt will compete for nitrite exchange in the fishes gills. Since marine fish are surrounded by chloride ions they're less susceptible to nitrite. Well, to be clear, I know my...

    Conservative cycling

    1) Sorry Bang I can't find the link :( I jus checked all my posts. 2) @florida joe, I came across some readings which suggested nitrite is only really harmful in concentrations above 100-200ppm, maybe even 300ppm. In your experience is this not the case? (And yeah I have a nitrite test kit so...

    Conservative cycling

Thanks guys! So you advocate just allowing the nitrates to go wherever they go and then waiting for them to actually come down via denitrification to 'safe' levels before fish. And that as long as I wait they will come down. Read a lot about people saying their nitrates didn't come down post...

    RO/DI set up

Just an update in case anyone wanted to know, I'm using HDPE (grade 2 plastic). I gave the buckets a vinegar rinse and then an RODI scrub. 1L of water sitting in it for 2 weeks and tds remained at 0-1ppm :)

    Conservative cycling

Hello Newbie here setting up a 400L tank. Getting ready to cycle with dead rock and dead sand, but I had a question. I was doing some research and indeed I found many posts where people had sky high nitrates (>160ppm) post cycling. Often requiring a 100% water change following the cycle, or...

    Stocking and feeding

Will do the research :) Not planning on having corals for a while anyway. I was just wondering because I remember reading somewhere that a guys clownfish hosted his powerhead. Oh right clownfish hosted by anemones. Sorry I was confused, since it's a mutualistic symbiotic relationship I was...

    Seachem Phosnet

Thank you :) I'm gonna run it from day one of the cycle. Prevention of high phosphates better than cure.

    Seachem Phosnet

Has anyone used this? What are their results? My LFS guy reckons once I get past the possible initial phosphate leak from my dry rock die off, with a normally stocked tank it would last me 5-8 months. That seems too good to be true..considering I've seen people using GFO from 1-8 weeks tops.
