so you reckon cycle the tank, and see how it goes with stocking and water maintenace etc..? And then once I get algae problems I can't handle, add things on?

    Po4- control in new tank?

Ok the macro algae also sounds good. Issue is I can't get chaeto here in NZ. Only caulerpa. And I've heard it has issues with going sexual etc and also it needs 24hr lighting. But I'll ask my LFS if they'll give me some :) If I'm willing to clean the algae scrubber every second week is it...

    Po4- control in new tank?

Any advice on Santa Monica ATS? Or a DIY ATS? It seems like the DIY ones have to be a certain size, whereas Santa Monica sell based off of feeding amounts. 1 cube a day size = $150.

    Po4- control in new tank?

Awesome! I was already half convinced on the algae scrubber but you guys have convinced me. Now I just need to make sure I have to right size for a 105 gallon tank. Heard they don't work if too small. Cheers guys

    LFS and bubble algae

Unfortunately I can't get emerald crabs in NZ due to import restrictions I think! Ahh yes the local fish store said something similar, they told me a good dip and maybe quarantine would be sufficient to avoid it. And yes algae scrubber! I've started looking into one. I'm thinking of actually...

    Po4- control in new tank?

I am currently setting up my new 400L reef tank with sump. Just designing the rockwork. Yes I have a skimmer. Will have live rock and a DSB in the sump. I have been through hell and back reading about PO4- control mechanisms. NOPOX, vodka dosing, algae scrubbers, refugium with macro algae...

    LFS and bubble algae

I have found an awesome new LFS that have a good range of marine fish. They have an awesome frag tank too. I wanted to buy some corals from there later as my usual stores don't sell frags only large expensive corals. (I haven't even cycled my new tank yet, planning on softies in 6-8 months...

    Filtration media

Hello again Newbie here setting up their 400L (105 gallon reef tank). Haven't started cycling yet just working on rocks. Do you guys think as a beginner I need any filtration media in my tank? Like carbon, GFO, zeovit? Or are these only to be added if I can't maintain my tank later? I plan on...

    RO/DI set up

Ah right, I was thinking of getting a large bucket which I can then put on a dolley. Because I'm also having trouble finding a nicely shaped food grade bucket with wheels (no brute or Rubbermaid where I live, only farmers food grade barrels). Does anyone know is grade 2 plastic is ok? HDPE?

    RO/DI set up

Thanks for your advice! I will get two 120L buckets then, so I can do 20-30% water changes easily.

    RO/DI set up

Hello, I have a 400L tank. I am currently setting up my water making station and reservoir. What size water drums do you think I'll need? And how many? I'm just totally at a loss as to what size I will need in future and which will be easiest for me to manage water changes etc.. The drums...

    Deep sand bed

Anyone here have a deep sand bed? Could they tell me how it went for them? I see people on YouTube claiming a mature 6-12 month sand bed can denitrify the tank and complete the cycle for you. And if it has lots of fauna and flora it'll turn itself over and never need siphoning.

    Tap water in marine aquarium

Awesome thank you! As it is I'll only leave it in for a day at most, waiting to see if we have any leaks.

    Nitrate post cycling

Ahh ok thank you! I think I'll put dry rock in there during the cycling curing process to create more porous rock habitat for bacteria. If I find nitrates are unmanageable later then I can add a refugium. I have learnt after 3 years of freshwater fish keeping not to feed too much and control my...

    Tap water in marine aquarium

Oh well not that specifically, but my concern was the plastic piping would somehow absorb impurities from the water and leech it back out over time. I thought this highly unlikely but wanted to be sure.

    Tap water in marine aquarium

Cheers! Goddamn the piping on this Aqua one 400 kept leaking. Have fixed it with silicone gel though! :)
