New tank is up and running

Very good for you to take it this way. These guys really do have you and your fish's best interests in mind. I'm quite angry a fish store would sell you 4 fish to put in a brand new system. I fine it highly unethical as they know that these fish are going to suffer if you leave them in there...

    Sea Fan

I'd have to see some research to believe differently. Not saying I'm definitely right, just saying I'm not convinced. Poop I can believe, select marine snow possibly. I'd just think they would require a much more robust digestive system to consume phyto.

Need some help with all this new stuff

Bare bottom, Starboard, and live sand (deep sand bed or shallow sand bed) are all popular options.

I don't believe they can eat phyto.

Need some help with all this new stuff

Miracle Mud became popular for refugium substrate about a decade ago. The claims are it's natural substrate from estuaries that contains supplies of minerals that assist macroalgae and even coral growth such as iron, manganese, stuff found only in lagoons feeding coral reefs. It all sounded...

    Sea hare

They grow to about a foot long. They're bulky though, think of something like a big shoe sitting in the tank. I think you're on track with the lifespan.

    Sea hare

They can lead long productive lives but to be safe you might want to loan it to the next person with a hair algae problem. They can live just fine off of raw Nori sheets. They do get rather large though...

    Sea hare

IIRC they only eat Bryopsis and other Hair Algae. What type of algae do you have?

    Frustrated adding new fish

Only if she's using tap water. I wouldn't think anyone putting that much money into a system would use anything other than purified water.

    Frustrated adding new fish

Again, just my opinion. Many Damsels are hyperactive and therefore increase the bioload disproportionately. That said, the big issue isn't bioload, it's space. You can cram 100 fish into a freshwater tank successfully because they can handle being close to each other. Most Saltwater fish...

    Frustrated adding new fish

If you have 10 fish in a 75 gallon tank that could be why you are having difficulties with new fish. Just my opinion, but I would recommend having one single centerpiece fish such as the Rabbitfish you already have and perhaps 3 or 4 smaller fish. Every fish you add past the 4 or 5 reduces...

2 questions - macro lighting and cycle

I agree with Snake on the ghost feeding. I've cycled many dozens of tanks and in my experience the best long term results are from fresh live rock to start the cycle, frequent water changes to keep ammonia present but low, and ghost feeding to stabilize bacteria colonies. I'm less sure about...

i just went to a zoo they had real cool saltwater fish

It was something like 12' X 3' X 3' I'm looking for pictures, apparently I was to busy to take many pictures. Check out the size of the Birdsnest. For scale, the Sohal is just under a foot long.

You brought back some fond memories of when I used to help a local zoo maintain their reef tank. Those were good times.
