    converting freshwater tank to salt

In 40 years of keeping saltwater fish I have never "sanitized" live rock - after all, the operative word to describe the rock is "live", referring to all of the diverse organisms that are in it. When I buy rock I only examine it for aptasia and mojano. Anything else is fine with me, I can use...

    Damsel problems

You can trap either the damsel or the cardinal, or you can just give up on the cardinal, who probably won't survive this. To trap a frish take a look at this video.

Advice on 92 us gallon 350 litre marine tank

You can add fresh water, then salt. Don't add your LR and ls until you have adjusted the salinity.

Fishless cycling of tank with raw shrimp

If you have nitrates but no ammonia then the tank is cycled. You can add fish gradually.

Fishless cycling of tank with raw shrimp

You may see only a very small spike (occasionally, none at all) if the lr was heavily populated with bacteria. It is the same principle we use when we keep a small filter pad in the sump of the dt, then transfer it to a qt when we begin to quarantine a new fish. The bacteria on the pad produce...

Advice on 92 us gallon 350 litre marine tank

This site recommends, for a 30-90 gallon system, a final CUC like this: Dwarf White Leg Hermit Crab 20 Turbo/Astrea Snail 20 Assorted Reef Safe Starfish 1 Peppermint Shrimp 3...

Advice on 92 us gallon 350 litre marine tank

The Bubble Magus c6 is an in-sump skimmer - you cannot hang it onto the back of the tank, and you don't want the pump for it to be in your display, so I would forgo this item. For a fish only with live rock (FOWLR) system a skimmer is not very important so long as you keep up with your water...

Advice on 92 us gallon 350 litre marine tank

Whoa...slow down there. There are a couple of problems with your plan, and it would be helpful if you could tell us something about the remainder of your system (sump? skimmer?, how much live rock?j etc.). A 92 gallon tank is kind of borderline for tangs, who like lots of open water to swim...

    Couple quick questions

pajama cardinals are pretty peaceful fish, so I am guessing that there should not be any problems. Same thing for the clown; ocellaris are one of the most peaceful of the clownfish. Just as a precaution I would rearrange the rockwork before adding the new clown so that there are no territorial...

Blue Spotted Puffer Not Behaving the Same

You are right - something less than good is going on in the tank, but exactly what is difficult to pinpoint. First thing I would do in my tank at home if I were having the same problem would be to measure ammonia, nitrite and pH in the water. It is especially concerning that it appears that...

started backwards, life and then tank, need advice

The diatoms will eventually go away as the tank balances itself out. We all get them in new systems, no big deal. I wouldn't worry much about the damsel becoming aggressive - it will, but since there are no other fish in the tank it can attack the rock all it wants, but be careful putting your...

    Diatom Alge help

Diatoms require silicates and phosphates to thrive. So...guess what tap water has plenty of - yup, silicates and phosphates. That is why I strongly recommend that everyone use RODI (reverse osmosis deionized) water for mixing saltwater and topping off. RODI has no silicates or phosphates, so...

    fist saltwater tank need help..

Your plan might work, but it will be difficult. A single mandarin will consume more than 200 copepods/day. That translates into a very large continuous supply. How large a tank are you considering for your display? Too small and you will have problems with stability (especially for a...

    converting freshwater tank to salt

Yes, if you use RODI for top-off and to make fresh salt water you are fine. When you add salt mix to RODI you are dissolving solids into the water, to the TDS goes way up, but it is important to start with RODI so that you are not adding toxic dissolved substances that might be in your tap water.

    feeding

Nassarius snails will stir the sand bed and consume leftover food and fish poop as well. it is also a neat sight to see them emerge from the sand bed when they detect that you are feeding the fish.
