    Stocking 10 gallon starter tank

You are overstocked with fish. I would not add anymore fish. Depending on your lighting you could add another coral and even a small starfish, but a 10 gallon system is very small and difficult to keep balanced, so I wouldn't overdo the stock list until the tank settles down and you become...

    Water softener ad salt tanks

Red algae is Cyanobacteria, and can be a real pest. Perhaps the easiest way to limit it is to improve water quality with some additional changes and increase water movement with powerheads (cyano hate water currents). I got my unit from airwaterice online at least 10 years ago, and love it.

    Fish compatible help

Difficult to predict. Sometimes butterflies and triggers can coexist, especially in larger systems with lots of rock. The problem with huma huma triggers is that eventually most go insane at some point and attack everything in the tank.

How do i get this algea to stop growing on my sand???!!!

You need to lower the nutrient level in your water. The ammonia level is too high. Unless you have had a fish "disappear" recently, or you added some new live rock, you are probably over feeding or overstocking. Address those problems, do some water changes and add some macro algae to your...

    Water softener ad salt tanks

It shouldn't matter since you should not use tap water at all. Either invest in a RODI system, or purchase RODI from a retailer. Using tap water, hard or soft, will lead you to problems with algae, diatoms etc.

    Coral & Salinity

LOL - I agree. Hobbyists always use specific gravity. I never see true salinity used except by lab people or field ecologists. But...he asked.

    2" Blonde Naso Tang

Small tangs have a terrible record of survival in the hobby. I never buy tangs smaller than 3-4".

    adding fish??? HELP!!!

It was a cycled tank, but it isn't anymore. Almost certainly you have lost most or all of the beneficial bacteria from the rock and sand due to immersion in pure water. I would recycle the tank and then begin to add fish slowly. BTW, always allow 24 hours after adding salt to water before...

    Coral & Salinity

If the salinity is 1.025 then what is the specific gravity at? The specific gravity is 1.025, and the corresponding salinity is 35 ppm.

    180 FOWLR stocking

That looks sort of overstocked to me. Also, I wouldn't add the butterflies first - they generally need a mature tank with lots of live rock to graze on. You might want to start with the anthias colony, then the sailfin tang, then one or two butterflies. Don't go overboard with angels - they may...

    help protien skimmer not working

I have been running my 40 gallon system with fish and corals for over a year without using a skimmer, just a very aggressive algae turf scrubber and have no detectable phosphate or nitrate. I do monthly water changes and other than mechanical disasters (hurricane sandy,, etc) everyone seems...

    Sump Tank Style Tank

I prefer the long - it gives you a larger footprint for adding equipment.

putting higher end filters on a smaller tank

ok what about my return pump, its a mag drive 700, im worried it might be too much flow Put a gate or ball valve on the output side of the pump and you can easily regulate the flow.

Mandarin dragonettes are not not cold water fish.

While I was away last week the heat in my building went off and my office went to freezing temperatures, a differential that the heaters in my 40 gallon system could not deal with. As a result, the mandarin that I trained to take frozen foods died , and I am now planning (fearfully) to get...

Tank Upgrade Shopping List and Questions

My guess is that the 1200 gph should be fine, but just to be safe you should put a gate or ball valve on the return side of the pump. I have the Eschopps 300, and have previously posted on this site that it didn't have much room for equipment in it. Measure the footprint of your skimmer, and...

    Biocube 29gal Cycling

Good attitude - nothing good happens fast in this hobby. There is no firm rule about how long a tank takes to cycle. It may take no time at all, or may take 6 weeks. With the live rock and sand you ahve I would guess that cycling shouldn't take a long time, but you don't go by time, but by...

Old timer needs advise on new 90gal FO setup

I am at least as old school as your brother, but I have been converted! Do not go with crushed coral - it will just make for more work and it will limit the types of organisms you can house.
