Finally got the go ahead from my wife...

iI just looked at the specs on a md 18 and its shutoff head is 16.4 ft. So at 15' even with the md 18 you might be moving 175 gph at the most... Thanks, you got me rethinking the whole return pump issue. I'm now leaning towards using a Reeflow Hammerhead pump. It looks more than sufficient, and...

    Biocube filtration question

Do you have any live rock in the tank? If so, and you have enough (about 1 lb/gal) you could eliminate the bio balls gradually. I use macro algae and a skimmer too (I already had the skimmer)

    Biocube filtration question

If there were non-photosynthetic algae, you wouldn't want it in your tank. It is the process of photosynthesis that consumes waste from the water and fixes them into new algae that you can easily remove. Macroalgae does need light, but nothing fancy is required. An incandescent bulb will work...

    Good worm?

Just a bristle worm. Don't touch it or you will find out why it is also called a fire worm.

Hello Everyone I'm New and Need Some Advice!

I haven't had a mechanical filter on any of my tanks since 1994, and have not had any water quality problems that a filter would fix. On my current 220 gallon system the only mechanical filtration I have is a skimmer and a filter sock on the sump inlet.

    Niger trigger

Generally, a niger trigger would consider chromises and damsels as good fun in the same way that popcorn at the movies is fun), quickly eaten, then gone.

Hello Everyone I'm New and Need Some Advice!

IMHO the initial 70 lb of LR is sufficient. Adding LR later runs the risk of starting another cycle, to the detriment of your current stock.

    agressive fish only tank...

Don't put a lionfish in with your two triggers. There are two possible outcomes: If the lion is large enough it will eat the triggers. OTOH, if the triggers are too large to be lunch, they will spend most of their spare time (which, for fish is almost all of the time) nipping at the lion's...

    Is this stocking option overcrowded?

Three concerns: 1. Green chromis should be kept in odd-numbered groups, so consider three instead of two. That said, I have never had success with these beautiful little guys in even or odd numbered groupings 2. Rabbit fish are too large for a 55 gallon system. They get to be over 12". Always...

    Fish ID??

It does sound like a coral beauty except for the colorless tail, which could just be an individual variation in coloration.

55-gallon fish only start up help needed

Filtration really isn't a problem as long as you add your stock slowly so that your bacterial colony has sufficient time to expand to deal with the increase in waste. The issue will be nitrates, which filters don't remove. Fortunately, from the look of your stock wish list, you are planning a...

55-gallon fish only start up help needed

Lionfish often have problems when housed with puffers and triggers. If the trigger or puffer is too large to be dinner for the lion, then they usually spend much of their free time nipping at the lion's fins. If you do decide to house these together you will quickly find that you have too much...

I would not mix two dwarf angels in your system. You can get away with a lot of incompatible fish in a large system, but in a 55 the chances of territorial aggression are just too high. Take a look at some of the reef-safe fairy wrasses. My current fave is the red velvet fairy wrasse -...

Finally got the go ahead from my wife...

I plan on using 2 Mag-18 pumps. Each is rated at 575 GPS @ 15 feet, which I think should be ok.

Finally got the go ahead from my wife...

I have a 2 year old 220 gallon system with an under-tank sump fitted with 2 gals of bioballs, a skimmer, an algae scrubber and pumps for the scrubber, the return, the chiller and the skimmer. It is impossible to work in the sump, there is no room, and all of the pumps listed are submerged in...

    Stock List

The bad news is that you have already a series of stocking mistakes by adding the damsels so early in the stocking sequence. They become very territorial, and will eventually even attack you when you put your hands in the tank (Flower, from this board has even had damsels draw blood from her...
