yellow tail blue tang. aka hippo tang.

I have done that in the past, and gotten away with it. However, if your hippo happens to bring in ich your treatment choices are limited in the dt since you can't use copper, and the larger volume makes hypo a pain. I would go with a real qt.

    Clownfish shopping list for beginner?

The anenome/clownfish relationship is one of the hobby's great sights, but don't rush into it. The anemone is not especially tricky, so long as you are prepared for it. The preparation will include high intensity lighting (T5 minimum, LED or metal halide preferred) and a mature tank. This...

Should local news media remain free online, or are you ok with a monthly access fee?

Long Island Newsday online is free for subscribers to the printed edition. So I subscribe, and use the paper to line the bottom of our bird's cages, and read the online edition. OTOH, the NY Times online edition is free for 10 articles/month. Beyond that, you have to subscribe to either the...

How do I feed a rock beauty

You could try Ocean Nutrition Angel Formula, which has some sponge in it. I don't know how much is in there, but I have kept an Imperator angel for 15 years with this (and greens and other meats as well), and a queen angel for 9 years likewise.

yellow tail blue tang. aka hippo tang.

I have found them to be peaceful, beautiful and outgoing. On the downside, they can scare the h--l out of you when they wedge themselves into a crevasse in the rockwork, something they do when they are frightened, or sleeping. They require lots of swimming space, and must be quarantined since...

    Porcupine puffer.

Carbon does nothing for ich, and I'm still not convinced that you had an ich problem. If the fish has nothing on it right now and is in quarantine, just keep him there for several weeks. If it has ich, it will reappear and you can do hypo or copper then. Just try to get it eating and feeling...

Niger Trigger found dead this morning

The fact that the pH dropped indicates that water conditions were not good. What were the ammonium levels?

When to add live sand and rock

K:laughing:You say you are waiting for the water to cycle, which will never happen. Cycling involves providing nutrient in the form of ammonium so that bacterial colonies will grow in adequate numbers to remove the toxic waste produced by your livestock. These bacteria do not live in the water...

Cycling new ten gal with very min live rock.

You are making a simple job into a complex undertaking. Just put the krill (the equivalent size of a cocktail shrimp) into the tank for a week - if the ammonia doesn't rise, your tank is adequately cycled and is ready for a fish (one only). If the ammonia rises, leave the krill in until it rises...

    In Sump Protein Skimmer Suggestions

AquaMedic makes a skimmer that can be hung on the outside of the sump, or inside as a freestanding unit.

Question about new live rock I just got.

I don't. I move some bioballs from my dt's sump to a hob filter when I need the qt. That seems to work fine unless I am quarantining a particularly large fish.

    New to Saltwater

I wouldn't plan on the butterfly or mandarin until the tank was at least 1 year old. Until then most tanks are to sterile and these specialized feeders won't find sufficient food. Sadly, most mandarins in the hobby starve to death since their keepers don't provide a sufficient supply fo...

It depends. What are your stocking plans - reef? FOWLR?

    Cycling your tank with Fish.

You said that you got " live rock now fully cured to my door". Does this mean that it was shipped? If so, there will be considerable die off when it is added to the tank, and you will be doing a fishless cycle whether you add fish, or not.

    Coral beauty angel

I wouldn't do anything radical yet. What are your water parameters? Obviously something very bad is going on in your tank, but we should try to figure out what it is/was so that future repetitions can be avoided.

what can I put in my refugium.

You should not use anything like purigen unless you are responding to a specific problem. Is there much detritus on the bottom of the refugium? Could it be stirred up during the change? Is the water clear before you add it to the tank?

    Live Rock

Yeah, I usually buy my rock locally so that I can select the pieces to create an attractive aqua scape.

    Question About New Setup

Ok cool. I do need another 20 pounds of sand do you recommend any other type to mix with what I already have? You really only need sand to the extent that it looks good to you design wise. Many people use no substrate at all. I personally like a thick bed, your choice.

    Need some help!

Forget the mandarin. Most won't eat prepared foods and survive only by grazing on the Copepods in the system. This requires a very established, large system or continual expensive restocking with Copepods.
