    What is this?

yeah possibly foraminiferans, or maybe articulated coraline algae (which would be cool as hell because its gorgeous as it develops)

Electricity and water: you aren't paranoid enough

I would say this picture sums it up. (yes it burnt that bad on a GFCI breaker which will be replaced with a brand new one since it burnt that bad before it tripped I will be contacting the manufacturing company since the GFCI breaker is fairly new and should have tripped way before that happened)

Having trouble growing plants in refugium

yeah GHA is generally considered a micro algae, along with most of the pyto algae types. Macro algaes generally consist of things like Phaeophyta, Chlorophyta (you know like Caulerpa, Valonia etc. or the calcareous ones like Halimeda, Ripocephalus etc.) But of course in this hobby we tend call...

    not sure what these are

crabs are scavengers, rotting flesh covered in bacteria is an appetizer.

    Protein Skimmer

Actually your post was great showing that tanks can benefit from skimmers and that you love the function. aliens post saying that with out a skimmer you have dead fish in weeks was extremist at best, when tons of people know for a fact that its fairly easy to run a tank skimmer less.

    not sure what these are

I'm more inclined to say its a bacterial bloom you disturbed a lot of stuff, it should level out. a tunicate is going to have a spout for siphoning and is not going to envelop food.

    not sure what these are

also in the picture there appears to be a lot of detritus on the rock as well as algae growth starting. I would suggest increasing flow and maybe start thinking about enhancing clean up crew if tank levels are safe for adding them.

    Lexel sealant

My favorite method is to just drill a hole in each rock and use plastic dowels to "pin" the rock together. that way if you want to take it apart later you can easily.

    What is this?

is it hard or soft? squishy? slimy? almost looks like it might be a little piece of a leather coral of some sort regrowing, or a calcerous algae some sort of description as to texture or feel would be a great help in analyzing it.

    not sure what these are

very well could be rotting food, you never know what is going to grow on stuff like that. if you have excess food lying around your way over feeding for your fish and scavangers to handle.

Having trouble growing plants in refugium

I would be very surprised if any water was "too clean" to grow macro algae, unless there was another algae consuming the nutrients (like a turf scrubber), if there are fish in the tank there is plenty of fuel for the macro algaes. OP: your test kits aren't going to register positive low enough...

Would Phytoplankton replace spot feeding my duncan coral or any other coral?

Reply: thats not uncommon, being a scavanger it's in their nature, but it can damage some corals or anemone when stealing their food, they don't really care if they are hurting it when ripping it out of their mouths. You can always give him his own chunk of something while you feed but even that...

Would Phytoplankton replace spot feeding my duncan coral or any other coral?

most corals are carnivorous, consuming zooplankton in various sizes (depending on the coral) there are very few that can subsist on phyto, the good thing about phyto is it can feed the zooplankton that can develop in our tank hence in the long run and in a round about way feeding our corals...

    Alternative energy from the Aquarium

the problem with putting a generator after a pump is multiple, you lose flow rate and generate less energy than you get put into it. all you would do is reduce the flow and cost of running it so in that case just put on a smaller pump to get the same result. as for photopanels, the cost of...

    Bio-diversity: my thoughts

yes that was my intent, skimmate from others tanks at start up. not from your own. Stop yelling at me I just woke up.. :D

    Bio-diversity: my thoughts

Oh I also forgot to mention skimmate. Yeah if you read the analysis of skimmate they find some cool bugs and bacteria in there so if you grab a little of the watery stuff chances are you will get some different stuff plus a way to add some organics to break down and assist in feeding the cycle...

Having trouble growing plants in refugium

I would agree with what everyone else is saying, it just doesnt look like enough light on the fuge. whe your trying to grow algae more par in the red end of the spectrum is best so as many watts of regular plant spectrum bulb as you can easily get on there is what you want.
