Opinions on De Bary 25w UV

HI, wanting to know opinions on using a UV on a reef tank ? Very mixed opinions here in Aussie land. about 50/50 on running or not. Some say run 24/7 some say just when adding new fish ? Some say def dont ? Some say wouldn't live without running UV. Whats the thoughts over there on these...

    So...what's your "secret?"

@pegasus The Hanna phos egg is the only hanna checker that I (and many other reefers)_ believe is worth spending your money on. I bought cal, alk and phos. Sold the cal and alk within 3 months, and went back to salifert test. easier to use (less hassles means your more likely to use ) I and...

    Help with a Bubble coral

It doesn't look great. Its a bit hard to see in pictures, but is the back half of that coral bare ? No bubbles. ? IT look's like the polyps are receding, not a good sign at all Bubble corals don't like really strong flow, have you tried changing positions ? What are all your parameter like, in...

Trouble Keeping Invert / Beginner Corals

@pegasus Unfortunalty we cant 100% run, it is too bright and too much light that way. Wish we could if we could get an extra % from the globes, but i am afraid it not possible. We run channel 1 at 65% channel 2 at 75%. so I suppose its just replacing every 9 months for us :(

    purple tip nem

@jay0705 Just for you inforamatin, There is no such thing as a healthy White Anemone. (even with colored tips) If the main stem/polyp is white it is bleached. And will need extra food to recover. Lots of people buy them thinking they look pretty, and they do, i made same mistake as a...

Trouble Keeping Invert / Beginner Corals

I also run T5's. love the coral colour and growth. @pegasus . I am amazed that your able to change your globes every 12-18months. We have been recommend to change every 9-12 months. And for sure around the 9 months mark we certainly do notice a difference in the lighting. We have a sunrise...

    Maintenance routines

Trouble with power head is it blows all your corals off. So i use a turkey baster, much more gentle and you can direct it into small holes and caves without to much damage.

    sumps.

Nothing worse than a sump that cant handle siphon.......eeeek... Think a lot of people forget about that side of the sump. I know a few people that have flooded the house. lol.

    sumps.

You have to make sure that if there is a power outage, you sump is able to handle the water volume of your tank when return pump is off. and it back siphons. Other than that your good to go.

    Just a few questions

    I. Was actually the one that suggested removing the bio balls as I mentioned , they 100% become nitrate problems. Take a look at the Matrix it us an amazing product. I have recommended it to many reefers having nitrate issues & has worked every time.

    Just a few questions

Seachem matrix will and does remove nitrates too unlike bio-balls. Water changes are not the only way to control them ?

    Low alkalinity

hi, I think @bang guy has hit the nail on the head. try what he says for a week and see. As far as my mag goes, I am still dosing more alk and cal than mag, just my mag usage tripled since adding clams. I still dose way less mag than both the others. Good luck with it, i will be following.

    Just a few questions

I would ditch the bio- rings and replace with seachem matrix. The bio-balls/rings become nitrate factories and are not worth the trouble. They are not generally used in a salt water set up. Other than that, follow what has already been said for the cycling and you should be good to go. Just be...

    Low alkalinity

I dose more alk than cal too......I think it all depends on the corals you are keeping. Since adding 3 clams i have also almost doubled my mag dosing to stay consistent. The rule of thumb i have heard is you will drop 2.8 dkh alk to every 50 ppm cal. Do you keep corals ? This is a rough guide...

    Nitrate levels

I assume you have a sump ? I run seachem matrix ( 2kg) in my sump. I have them in bags do I can rinse off every couple of months but I swear they do an amazing job. They do take a couple of months to grow the denitrifying bacteria though, so not a quick fix but long term great value. I also...
