New upgrade and build begins ! eeek

Ok, I don't know why really, but I suppose the fish & corals need more room. The current tank has filled quickly. The fish are growing fast and we are selling corals right left and center to create room. We thought it would tank forever to fill this tank, but it appears we are slightly more...

    Large Reef Tank - Pre Build Advice - 150 G to 200 G

If your tank is going against a wall, you don't want too wide or its very hard to get to the back wall for any reason. Depending on the fish you want to keep. Just remember too that the longer you go. lighting can become a problem as most lights come in standard sizes. EG 5 foot. You also need...

    Large Reef Tank - Pre Build Advice - 150 G to 200 G

HI, The only difference between a smaller tank and a larger tank is the equipment you need is "rated" for more gallons. Eg Deltec Skimmer has one that is rated for 40g right up to the one rated for 600g. They work the same but are bigger units. And tend to cost a lot more. Dont need an apex...

    10 Months old today.

Tank has the 10 month old mark today. Seems to be the sort of 'sweet spot"" time. Water is stable, uglies are over and corals seem to be coloring and growing really nicely. In particular the clams seem to be thriving, I am seeing new scallop growth on all the clams about every 7-8 weeks. Our...

    Coral help!

@pegasus I don't believe anyone would bite anyone's head off around here. I certainly hope you wouldn't think I was going to do that :). Healthy discussion is what I like to call it. I am not sure about what you say - if cal & alk remaining steady it means mag is all ok. Would love to...

    Coral help!

Thank for your resonse BUT once again we seem to disagree (happens a lot to us ) I recently watched a video from Mr Saltwater tanks he had a client with problem with his tank that he was called out to diagnose. No it wasnt nitrates, and if nitrates are this guys only issue then well and good...

    Coral help!

Hi, Flower I have to say once again i disagree with not having to test mag. Mag is the stabilizer to Alk & cal. They are all intertwined, if he is having problems with corals I would strongly suggest a mag test would be in order. Yes regular water changes help maintain, but does not...

Looking to start a 120 gallon reef tank

Great advice already given. Only thing I think is that don't waste extra $ on live sand but do invest in some good quality porous live rock. The sand will become live very quickly. Good luck with your venture. Research research research !!!

    Fish For New Tank???

That tank will be terribly overstocked with that list. It's far to small for 2 x each hippo and yellow. Hippos will stress very easily and " bam " problems. All the fish you mention are also high waste producers so I can see you also running into nutrient issues very quickly in such a small...

    125 gallon filtration no sump

May I ask why you don't want to run a sump ? I personally would t run a reef tank without one. Not only can you hide all equipment but it significantly increases your water volume , which in turn will help create stability. You can use natural filteration instead of canisters etc. I would...

    My 125 "reef"

I don't think any photos do our tanks justice. People that have seen pics of my tank then visit say exactly the same thing. My god the pictures don't really reflect it. So I hear you ! Us reefers can't afford bloody cameras because we are always broke !!!!!!!!! Well that's why I am anyway !!!!

    My 125 "reef"

Hahahah, yes fts, (full tank shot) You can actually see the rock work well in the picture , its very impressive, very natural looking and I can see why your fish enjoy it so much. That will look like a very genuine reef once it covered and aged some what. I congratulate you on it. you can see...

    Coral's won't open

thats is why I actually bring mine back to the 8 mark every time, i consider it a safety net lol. But I don't think 7 would be affecting the corals, as I said many people run the nsw here at 6 - 7 and have amazing corals. I really like having that buffer in case my doser fails.

    Coral's won't open

Its very interesting you say alk is very low ? We use natural sea water here and it is delivered at 6 dkh, I personally like to run 8 so I raise mine, but hundreds of reefers here with very nice systems (including sps) run theirs at the delivered number of 6. Is it not more important that if...
