    Phoenix Tanks

I believe this is probably some excellent advice, Henry. Since the tank floor is bare, blowing out the rock and vaccuming might be a great idea. More likely numerous times would be in good interest. Perhaps schedule that coinciding with the weekly water change. Fortunately, I'm too old to be...

    Phoenix Tanks

Thanks Henry. I think you see my scenario pretty clearly. I guess by "clean rock" I meant "kept protected"..it didn't set outside or anything horrible. I am sure there is plenty of leftover matter from when it was live rock. That is surely what started the cycle so well. I do have two powerheads...

    Phoenix Tanks

Thank you Teresa. I fed the tank some mysis. Though I kind of had the feeling that the rock might provide some cycle initiative, and with the ammonia level, I believe it. If memory serves, the ammonia will be converted to nitrite and then to nitrate. When the nitrates are down to 20 or so, then...

    Phoenix Tanks

I am so loving the look of this Clean tank (except that I know the ammonia is in there)!! I gutted the 55 tank Memorial Weekend, Sunday. I mean dumped the sand (8 yrs old) and scrubbed everything within an inch of its life. That means exactly 8 days ago. The live rock had become infested with...

    So, New tank......

Very nice tank! I have just begun a COMPLETE redo of my own 55 and came back in here because after 10 years since my last new tank set-up, I couldn't remember time frames and thought I would get some ideas. I now recall how much I hate waiting for the tank to cycle, but your tank is quite...

Little slug released things in my Seahorse tank.

It is possibly a stomatella snail. You can google for more info, but I am fairly sure they are harmless. I have a few in my tank (nice variety of shells) and have not seen problems with them.

Am I to late for her?

I am so sorry to hear about your male! How is your female doing? It is amazing how quickly these little creatures own our hearts!

    New Girl

Our little female did not make it. I discovered her yesterday afternoon, her tail may have been stuck on some part of the powerhead. I'm not sure. She was fine for the morning feeding, then when we got home, we found her up there. Very sad.

    Seahorse spitting food now.

Oooh, sorry, I assumed you were feeding mysis. Diiferent ballgame. I have some frozen BBS and if cyclopeze (?) is similar, I see that counting wouldn't be only silly but impossible. The leftovers are a great reason to have good tankmates!

Um....slight problem...I think we have a male and a female bird!

Hi Kelli, I kind of already mentioned this in another thread...it is possble you have two males and any "nonsense" could be a show of dominance? If they are a pair, she will lay eggs anywhere, including the bottom of the cage. Are both birds well trained and have they formed attachments to you...

    Help name this bird!!!!

The bird won't know Sophie is a (shhh) female name :) If you can come up with a more masculine spelling? Truth is, if you already have a male, this bird might very well exhibit female behaviors.

    Seahorse spitting food now.

Happy to hear things are OK. Dingus, since you are able to feed so often, you may want to literally count the shrimp that you offer your seahorse. In the wild they won't often have the opportunity to snick down alot at one feeding. Maybe try starting with 3 at a feeding and go from there. If you...

    Help name this bird!!!!

He is very handsome and I also had to go with Bongo! The males will be much more vocal in general. The bar pattern that TX mentioned will also be visible on the tail feathers of females, though on a fancy, it doesn't always mean female. This guys cheek patches are very bright, too, and the...

Anyone know why they do this?

This guy has been cruising back and forth across the front with his shell literally clanking the glass. He does this now and then..why?? Maybe the wrong place, sorry?

The Cause of Our Seahorses Dieing

Whoever created the protien skimmer should receive the Good Housekeeping Award, in my opinion. I have been a little concerned about an issue while reading through some posts and I truly believe that it has a very great impact on the longevity of our aquarium kept seahorses. I know I go on about...
