Red Sea has made the berlin skimmer for a long time now. They are made to run in a sump or plumbed inline. They also do make a HOB model that is pretty darn bulky.

I have noticed that anytime I change bulbs, do a good size water change, run carbon or like recently after adding a CPR sump/skimmer the corals will open up really big for a day or two and then calm back down. I am not sure what causes it but I assume that it is just the change that causes...

If you guys have the Glacier water machines that are in front of most supermarkets, you can use that water. It is really cheap ( I pay 30 cents a gallon ) and is RO/DI/charcoal and a few other filters to get you really good water.

Corals and algae of different types will cover the rocks but as far as the rock actually fusing together, no it will not.
