    just got my tank!

lol, thats a good idea. but do you mean 5 gallon or .5gallon? 1/2 gallon. It may be a little more than that but definately not quite one gallon. Maybe this image will give you a better idea on its size. I just got a couple more pieces of LR for it. Cant wait to put them in tomorrow. p.s. sorry...

    just got my tank!

A refractometer sold here is a fair price also. I have a couple salty friends at work but most everybody else at work say the same thing. Just last week I got myself a .5gallon tank for my desk. I've set it up as an invert salt tank. Everybody loves it and wants to get one now. Hehe. Just...

    sea urchin with white things

I agree. Poop. Mine does the same thing. Depending on what he eats will change what dumps out the top. The gf has even seen a little curly piece of cheato come out. :scared:

    just got my tank!

Exciting isnt it? I second the recommendation on the skimmer. They are a little expensive but very worth it. When you see it working, you will be glad you have it. I also second the recommendation on the refractometer. Far more accurate than a hydrometer and less messy. I also recommend...

Are sally lightfoots supposed to do that?

I'm under the impression that all "reef-safe" crabs are actually questionably reef-safe. I've read mixed stories about mithrax crabs so I figure its a hit/miss type situation. Probably the best thing to do is keep it well fed. That way it wont have the urge to nip at other stuff like your GSPs.

    Pom Pom crab

A LFS showed me one that lost his anemones. Several days later they had the same crab +anemones. The owner went on to explain about how he watched it grab an aptasia (he has an aptasia tank because he breeds berghias) and clip it down to size and used that. The one it made for its "off-hand"...

    Black sand

Another reason could be that the black sand doenst have the buffering qualities that aragonite does. For a reef, it would be another supplement to add.

    Switching Substrate Question

Have you considered just adding a layer of larger substrate? This is a good idea because the larger grains will always remain on top. If for some reason your sandbed is disturbed, the smaller grains will eventually settle under the large grains. Changing substrate is a pain. I did it a couple...

    Horrible kind of algae help!!!

Coralline also competes with nuisance algae. I believe nuisance algae will not normally grow over coralline.

    Horrible kind of algae help!!!

My glass started with the green stuff and just now, a few months later, its finally starting to get the purple growing on there. It's been growing on the rocks, though.

    what is this???

spline9, you have some and they spread... do they spread right next to the parent or do they disperse themselves? I think you normally see them spread near the parents but I used to have this one shell in the back of my tank... I took it out and put it in another tank. Just last night I...

Trying to get sump working! Help!

Oh good, I thought about trying the method you used but that seemed like it required a lot of effort to get all that air out. I was shown the method I explained above by a trusted LFS. Works like a charm each time. :D

    what is this???

Its not that difficult to keep, you just have to make sure it occasionally gets some meaty food. A few mysis/brine shrimp should do the job. If you keep feeding at the same time you can "train" it to open up at the same time of day. Mine used to open up every time I put my hands in the tank. It...

Trying to get sump working! Help!

I think I may have a fix... Your sump should have some water in it, use that water and submerge the j/u-tube. Get some plastic (like a sandwich bag or seran wrap) and rubberbands (the small ones you get from the LFS work great). Now cover each end of the tube with the plastic and rubberband...

White thingys at the top of my tank.

Is it just debris or are they actually organisms? Some sort of surface skimmer would help but for a quick fix you might want to try this... Get a paper towel and lay it on top of the water. Remove the paper towel. It shouldve soaked up the stuff. (disclaimer: I've never actually tried this so...

    brown spots on sand?

I can probably bet that what you have is a small diatom bloom. Its natural and occurs occasionally. It will go away on its own eventually by natural causes. No worries. Feel free to post a pic, though. I could be wrong.

    Horrible kind of algae help!!!

That is green coralline algae. Its the same as the purple stuff but not as cool lookin. If you really hate it, you can use a razor blade on glass or a credit card on acrylic.

    ID on snail

I second that guess on it being a Mexican Turbo. I had one die on me because it was unable to right itself (wedged upside down between the rock and glass). Sucked because he was my favorite snail. It looked much like that one, though.

    something new on my LR

I heard you could take some out, stick it in a blender and blend it up, then pour the sponge puree back in the tank. A little bit later you'll have sponges growing everywhere. Not sure if I would like that though... I like to see my rocks. Heh.
