Man, I wish I could just run an MSX for comparison. I have an ASM G-3 on my 75g and I can't imagine a skimmer pulling out more than that thing is pulling out already....almost a full skimmate cup per week and the neck is always completely caked.
Why not use the Fluval.....they make the thing so darn easy to clean these days. The only thing they haven't included is a little troll in box to actually clean it for you.

No facts to offer you FJ, but the only logical explanation I can come up with is the added nutrition/vitamins...
Mine only likes moderate flow. Try turning off you powerheads for a few hours to see if it makes an appearance.
Also, you might have a fish that is irritating it.
In December, I introduced a fish which became completely covered in ICH a few days later. Thought it was a goner for sure, so I started soaking flake and algae in Selcon and KM Garlic Xtreme and did this daily.
4 months later, that fish is fine and I've introduced several others since. No more...
Got a great deal on this colony of Purple/Blue Meridiana. The guy has a beautiful 300g mixed reef that he's breaking-down. It was previously a TOTM. He said it took up too much of his time.
