    A different question.

You are technically correct. I just figured for the purposes it serves the tank, it is the lack of oxygen that is important.
  2. trompet3

    A different question.

I wouldn't do it. Also, the deep sand bed is acting not because of no light, but because it provides an anoxic (no O2)zone. You can't produce this effect with what you want to do.

    Algea Problem

like I said before, the chemicals will not solve the problem of why you are getting the algae.

    What are these???

I think that these types of flatworms won't cause many problems. Six-line wrasses eat them. I haven't noticed any in my tank since I added one. I would first find out for sure if they are harmful. Maybe someone on this board knows. Pictures help.

    Algea Problem

by the way, you may also have a diatom problem in tank 1, but same treatment applies.

    Algea Problem

The top tank looks to me like cyanobacteria. I bet your phosphates are way high - get some phosgaurd for short term removal and do a ton of water changes with R/O water while siphoning out the crap. Using a net to scoop out the slime on the sand might help. With the second tank, you're also...

    What are these???

If they look like they have flat bodies, they are most likely flatworms. What you described sounds like them, especially the red dot.

The tropic marin bio-calcium is the best calcium additive besides a reactor. Since it's so expensive, buy it online.

Help with Purple Spot ID on Corals

I have seen the spots move sometimes. Well, not actually move, but they will have changed locations the next time I see them. I really don't know what they are, my guess of flatworms was because some of the shapes bear a resemblance.

Help with Purple Spot ID on Corals

Looks to me like flatworms. I'm not sure what species, and since different ones are good and bad, I don't know if they'll hurt the corals. I have similar ones on some of my corals. Not as prominant as the ones in these pics though.

    UL certification ?

yes, there is a price difference on the rio pumps, usually around 3-4 dollars. There are two or three models where you have the option of choosing ul listed or not. It just doesn't make sense to me why they would get them certified and then not use it on them (or some of them). Very weird, I...

    Horseshoe Crabs...

Two things: 1. I just had to say that horseshoe crabs freak me out. They have to be the ugliest creatures ever, with the exception of my 5th grade math teacher. Just my opinion, nothing to do with the topic. 2. Was it just me or did everyone else turn their head upside down when looking at...

how much of a wc is needed?

Also test the water you are using for the change. If it has nitrates in it, you're only replacing bad water with different bad water.

    Good LFS in MI

This is probably a 1-1.5 hour drive for you, but a great place is Preuss Animal House in Haslett (basically 30 seconds from MSU campus). They have one of the biggest saltwater departments in the state and they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Especially great for live goods. I know...

ecosys. garlic elixir vs. kent garlic extreme

Assuming I didn't want to use real garlic extract because I'm lazy, does anyone have an opinion on which of these two to use. I know kent's is 99% allium extract but I'm not sure the ingredients in ecosystems garlic elixir. I can't find it anywhere...if anyone knows that, please let me know as...
