IMO, it depends on the fish TBH......very docile fish can be housed more closely than aggressives like triggers...

Honestly I think that was bad advice. If you have bad tank maintenace you are going to have algae problems either way. It is much more beneficial IMO and IME to have sand than not. For instance, many types of fish and inverts need sand to survive because they have to dig so this will limit...

In your profile, I says you have a 29 gallon tank. If that is correct this may have been a bad choice of fish. They can get up to a foot and a half. OK so my anemone did that pooping thing last night....freaked me out at first but then I was uber thankful that I had read about it so many times here or I prolly would have ripped it out of the tank thinking it was dying....lol. Luckily by about midnight last night it had started to poof up...

Í don't know about in a nano tank but I just saw some black and white occelaris that was at least 7 inches at a LFS (the female was) and the male was prolly 5..........they were huge!! They were in a 75 gallon tank by themselves.......they said she was mean as hell too.......
