As long as it's strong enough to make the macro grow. I use an 18" T8 fluorescent strip light over mine. I have used 75 watt flood light bulbs in the clamp on workshop lamps before but if your refugium is visible then that method is a bit unsightly.

PC's just don't have the penetration that MH's and T-5's have. Something to consider about MH vs. T-5's is the natural shimmer that MH's create. Just can't get that out of T-5's. On the other hand, I think T-5's have a richer color to them. Maybe I just haven't tried the right MH bulbs though.

Something else to consider is T-5 bulbs are considerably cheaper than similarly sized PC's.
