What do you feed him and how old is your tank? Besides the red mark he doesn't look very healthy. the rock looks very void of algae which means he may be suffering from malnutrition and is slowly wasting away.

I think I've found my problem! now what?

I really don't like Kent additives. I like their salt but everything else seems really watered down or low quality. I like the Seachem additives. You should check your PH in the evenings before your lights go off and check it at the same time everytime. Ph drops naturally at night so it...

    in serious need of help!!

You may want to post your location and maybe somebody can hold your anename until you get the proper lighting. Don't worry about what has happened with your tank. You as with most of us started out with really bad advice from really bad pet stores that have to make money at our expense. Now...

Whats the best stuff to use to raise ph?

I would reccomend a calcium test kit as well. I use the Red Sea test kit and really like it. Calcium and PH seem to work together. If calcium is really high then PH tends to drop and vice versa. If you use RO/DI water then you may need buffer in your make up water to boost the PH up above...

Where in Nor Cal are you. Are you going to be selling anything and when. Cichlids like a high PH so I think that besides the skimmer and rock you could pretty much use everything else.

    lighting for canopy

If you want to use normal output bulbs then you can get a 2 bulb retrofit kit for about $30.00, or you can just mount a 2 bulb $5.00 shoplight fixture from walmart and put the aquarium bulbs in that. You won't be able to keep anything more than mushrooms probably but if you are not going for a...

Making rock caves and shelters out of Concrete mix? Will this harm my fish?

My 125 gallon reef is a mix of aragocrete and Figi and after the aragacrete gets covered in corraline and corals you can't really tell the difference.

Are There Any Good Supplements For Getting Your Nitrates Down?

Are you experiencing any algae or other problems. 20 is not really bad at all. You could try a Polyfilter pad. Not sure if they remove nitrates, but they do really clean up water quality which may help the nitrates. Yo could do the refugium and DSB thing if you want but it takes lots of time...

Base Rock to LR - Filter ?'s

Your base rock is already being saturated with bacteria . Bacteria will colonize any and all surfaces. Granted live rock already has some beneficial bacteria which will mean a quicker cycle, but as far as bacteria's growth rate, both surfaces will do the same thing.
