As for newly acquired animals...they will probably be hestitant to do alot of anything for a little while...as time goes on they will start venturing around the stomping grounds checking it...

    DKH about 8-12 or so. You would use a builder of some sort...Seachem makes one which supposedly doesn't affect the ph...

    Actually you are incorrect...bio-balls are engineered to have exactly that...more pore space for colonization of bacteria...hence the name...bio-balls... A 1 gallon container of Coralife balls has I believe over 21 square foot of colonization area....

    Calcium without alk and with O2 will precipitate into the water causing a cloudiness and also a white hard coating over most things in your tank, heater, etc...

    When you do a water change...use the water from the change to dip the balls in...never use freshwater for obvious reasons...I do mine all at once.

    Keep them clean and they will do what they are intended to do...let them get dirty and they will do what anything else does...collect debris and increase your nitrates...

    A closed loop circulation system is a centralized pump circulating the water through PVC or whatever releasing it in strategic points to ensure adequate water movement throughout the tank...I think that is what it is...I could be incorrect... I would think the idea is to limit the usage of...

    You must also ensure the temps are the same...temp will affect the salinity or specific gravity....

    The cleared area is probably surrounding the overflow...either you could increase the gph into the overflow...caution to not gp beyond its limits...or probably easiest to direct a powerhead toward the surface in a manner to sorta direct the film towards the overflow as mentioned above.
