    Water problem

Your water supply probably has phosphates and it took time to catch up...is the cloudiness green or white..probably green... Algea in the tank is probably hair algea...a very opportunistic type of microalgea...it is wicked...once its cycle starts it will die off when nutrients are low, decompose...

    cycle on five gallon

At this stage..I wouldn't really see how LR would benefit him in such a small tank...the Penguin is sufficient. Let your tank run its course...it will come about.

    What salt level

Same "salt level" as with any marine life... The difference between the two you listed is simply a unit of measure...somethings are measured one way and some are measured another... One is specific gravity which is the amount of salinity water can hold at a certain temp...as temp will effect the...

    Sponge Media

If someone was cleaning the sponge with freshwater you may have a point there Squidd... But if they are rinsing it in saltwater...then removing the sponge would cause an amonia spike as with the amount of water flowing through the 300 would ensure a very strong portion of the tanks bio activity...

Ever see a starfish in high nitrates? Does it die right away? Or does it become very sluggish and then die later on if the conditions do not improve.

has does eeryone feel about bio balls

That would be the idea of a portion of the pads function...filter the large chunks out...smaller particles passing through the sponges/pads...could still be trapped in the balls...you would still need to clean the balls just not as frequent. With the sump on my 90 I use about 3 1/2 gallons of...

has does eeryone feel about bio balls

I think sponges would be worse for collection of gunk versus bio-balls...due particularly to the tighter pores... Same as with the bio-balls...when you do a water change...retain the water...put your sponge in it squeez it...just like rinsing a kitchen sponge.

Growing caulerpa in it's own tank?

Something in the 10 for the macro to attach to is always a good thing...the light you stated should work ok. Your could always get a clip on utility light and put a grow spot bulb in it as well... As for the water swapping...i dont believe that woudl be suffice in removing or diluting everything...
