    Help... huge algae problem

#1 try doing 10 gallons every other week with ro/di water. I use the glacier water machines which is only 25 cents a gallon and is pure as you could want. By doing water changes every other week instead of every month you cut down on the changes that the tank goes through throughout the...

    Algae

One thing that the remover will do is kill off the slime alage and water changes and skimming will remove the dead algae before it pollutes the tank. Increasing water movement should prevent it from coming back. It is not like robbie has a full blown reef with thousands of dollars worth of...

    Algae

Putting in a airpump will do nothing but move water around. It is the moving of the water to the surface that oxyganates the water, not the air from the airstone. Running another powerhead will acomplish the same thing as an airpump without all of the saltspray One way to kill it off is to...

    Got some corals!! Now what...

Take them back and read up on this board before you get anyfarther into this hobby. Read up on lights, live rock, and sand beds. Learn all you can before you invest a ton of money on more corals. If you cannot take them back then list as much info as you can on your tank setup and we will try...

Water quality issues - need help!

If you are running well water through a ro/di filter then you may be going through membranes rather quickly. It may be alot cheaper to use the glacier machines. You should have the glacier water machines in olympia somewhere and it is ro/di/carbon/mechanical/yadayadayada. I have used it for...

    Cannister filters - nitrates????

How can nitrate possibly get stuck in a filter? Nitrate is not a solid object like debree. The canister does not produce nitrate but it works wonderfully at trapping debree that can be removed when the filter cleaned, and that means even less ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate that needs converted...

    Cannister filters - nitrates????

Because some people never clean then. But if they are maintained they will not contribute any more than any other filter to nitrates and will remove debri before it can breakdown, which will benefit the tank.

Water quality issues - need help!

If you can find a glacier water machine then get a couple 5 gallon jugs and use that water instead of well water. Get a buffer and dose about 1 tsp every night until it reaches 8.1-8.3, then wait a day or two and see if it drops. If it drops then keep up with the nightly dosing. Becareful...

    not bad for a newbie??

Nice start. If you get maxijets then go with the 900's. They use 1/3 the power of 1200's and run cooler. Plus they only produce 35 or 60 gallons per hour less.

    friendly advice if I may

When I first got on this board I remember asking questions and getting constructive critisism and throwing out rude comments because I had not got the hint that this board is trully to help hobbiest and not just a bunch of people who new nothing about tanks shootin the bull about fish tanks ...

    Stupid Question on Tank size

My first tank was a 60 gallon. I got it home and my dad used to be big into tanks measured my tank and said that it was a 53 gallon tank outside measurments. I went back to the store and threw a fit. I was so ticked off because after buying everything for a 60 gallon vise a 50 gallon I spent...

    Initial 90 gal tank setup?

Most fish stores want to help you out, and make money to stay in buisness at the same time. The berlin method that she advised you on does work well for lots of people. The underground filter works well for lots of people, and all of the other filtration methods work great to. My point is...

    deep sandbed???

A sand sifting star and horseshoe crab will deplete a SD of life I have read on this board. You would have to get info from people who have had experience with those critters to see if they will indeed deplete your SB of the needed and prefered fauna and life.

    deep sandbed???

Are your levels of nitrate high. why do you want to deepen your sand bed? If your levels are not a problem then all you are doing is filling your tank with sand. ( one of my books states that low levels of nitrate will not harm corals. I will have to read how low when I get back to the states...

    Newbie Needs Advice on Setup

i had PC's and really liked them untill summer when the heat, which is alot lower than MH really heated up my tank. Granted I have a low canopy and not a ton of circulation which I am sure was a big prt of it. I switched to VHO and corrected the heat problem and actually really like the way...

    Initial 90 gal tank setup?

If you can get the southdown or yardright aragonite, get that. I believe that you can test to see if it is aragonite by testing it in vineger to see if it bubbles. I have found sand before by going to the selling sections on reef sights and finding people who are breaking down tanks and almost...

    Initial 90 gal tank setup?

Secondtime. Maxijet 1200's use about 20 watts of power, run hot and only produce 60 more GPH than maxijet 900's that run much cooler and only use 8 watts of power. So why would you use 1200's over 900's in a 90 gallon, or in any tank for that matter ? Also, condi has the filters and skimmers...

    Initial 90 gal tank setup?

If you are going with fish only then 1-2 inches of sand will look awesome. You won't have the 4-6 inches of sand that a DSB takes and nitrate in a fish only tank ir really of little concern. Plus in a fish only tank the DSB will get disturbed depending on the fish you choose and the...

    ammonia levels

Your fish are probably feeling the stress already and returning then will just cause them to probably die in the store. Just wait it out and remove any dead ones that may pop up. You will have one heck of a cycled tank when you are done though which could be better way of looking at it:D
