    If it is a single canister type filter...chances are it is probably some sort of carbon block filter. If this is the case, phosphates, nitrates and silica will pass though it.

    They are not born with shells...they acquire them. As for breeding...that is a good question. I havent added any hermits for a good 6 months and just yesterday I noticed a few really tiny ones.
