More than likely its genetic. The only thing the spines will tell you is whether the clown is a true or false perc. I don't know the count on them but it differs by one. Coloring is alot of times genetic especially if you get tank raised ones. But as Bang Guy said it could be other things.

Sounds like an infection was there. Not sure what its called though. I've seen it before. Turns them redish around the gills. There are treatments for it. He may have gotten it when placed in your tank, ie going from one environment to a foreign environment. Powder Blues are like that.

Save it all. It will be like doing a really big water change. Just be sure to match the temperature and keep the ph and salinity the same during the xfer.

You have to really threaten them to puff up. I've caught one before and except for some frantic swimming didn't even inflate at all. Just be very gentle with them and you should'nt have any problems

I disagree with not being able to do any sps's. There are some yo ucan do such as porites and some montipora's(capricornus in particular). Do some hw and ask questions. Find out who keeps the most stunning sps's in your area and ask their opinion.

if you can help yourself and not add any more fish to your tank that will help him not to get sick. Keep a cleaner shrimp in there to control things too.
