    Dead and Alive

Lol I have that book!!! I guess I'm looking for pictures of dead corals compared to live ones because I haven't seen the differences...in stony ones...and don't know what to watch out for when buying corals from the LFS

    Dead and Alive

Was wondering if people could post pictures of corals that are healthy and the same kind of coral that's not healthy or even dead. I was walking through my LFS and thinking...how do I know if these corals are healthy or not if I don't know what a dead coral looks like. I know with the obvious...

    Going to try hyposalinity

Just posting an update for my own sake. Yesterday marked day one of the 4 weeks. Water is at a steady 1.010. pH doesn't want to get to 8.2, it stays at 8.0 (when I add sodium carbonate to it) otherwise it drops to 7.8. Temp is 78. Fish is eating 3 times a day. I take out what he doesn't eat. No...

    Going to try hyposalinity

Thanks for that tip. I was curious as to if it was ok if it was at 1.008 or 1.010 and not exactly at 1.009. Was wondering if I had that room for error when doing water changes or not. Now I know it's better lower than higher. How many water changes should I be doing on this hypo QT tank? It's a...

    Quick question about feeding.

I am not using a bottle, I'm using fresh garlic, pressed. (Following Beth's advise to use it fresh for medicated benefits.)

    Fish Trouble

I don't have a powerhead on mine right now. But I think I should get one. So I would say you will need a filter (HOB is fine), a heater, a hood with lighting (though I keep my lights off most of the day to keep stress down), and a powerhead. Make sure the QT is large enough to hold the fish you...

    Fish Trouble

I got my clown after about 6 weeks of being at my LFS. He was fat and happy in the store, he ate well. I saw him there for 3 weeks before I decided to buy him (the LFS had him about 3 weeks before that...so a total of 6 weeks at LFS). When I brought him home, he was very stressed and then over...

    Question on Xenia

Xenia was the one thing that my old tank seemed to love. It grew like wildfire. It was in low to medium flow. (I was able to see them pulse) They were at the top to middle of my tank and I had power compact fluorescent lighting.

    Fish Trouble

Did you have him in QT before adding him to the DT? If not, do you have a QT that you can put him in?

    Quick question about feeding.

I only have one clown fish in hypo now. The 29 gallon DT is empty of fish. Only have one cleaner shrimp and a CUC of snails and hermits in DT. I am still feeding the clown in the QT with garlic and I am dosing with Vit C. I am feeding him two to three times a day, but I only give him a couple of...

    Going to try hyposalinity

Thanks for the encouragement J. Good luck with the copper treatment. As nervous as I was about trying to do hypo, I was even more nervous about attempting to do copper.

    Going to try hyposalinity

On a side note... I am LOVING my refractometer!!!! I have checked my water so many times during this and I just love how easy it is to read! Why did I not ever get one of these when I was in the hobby years ago! No more swing arm for me Every time I check it, I go to the sliding glass door to...

    Going to try hyposalinity

Things went slower today. SG is now 1.012. It will stay there for the night. I'll finish the lowering tomorrow. I'm still struggling to keep the pH in a steady range....that's a battle for sure... Temp is better. Was a constant 78 today. Fish is showing no signs of stress. Is eating well. No...

    Repost for quick reply. Thanks!

no powerhead. I don't have one that wouldn't be too powerful for a 10 gallon. I am keeping the water below the return on the filter, in hopes that the 'waterfall' effect is enough for circulation.

Think things are moving too fast. Is this dangerous for my fish? Started lowering sg at 2:00pm yesterday. It started at 1.025 By 9:30pm sg was 1.016. (which is what it still is this morning at 9:00am) Here is the breakdown of time/sg level: 1:55pm - 1.025 2:00pm - 1.022 3:30pm - 1.020 5:30pm -...

HELP! Just checked the pH. I knew it would probably drop...but now that it has, I don't want to bring it up too fast. It is at 7.8. I am baking some baking soda in the oven right now to produce sodium carbonate to use to increase the pH. How much of this should I add at one time so that it...

    Going to try hyposalinity

I'm sure this is a silly question....but being that this is supposed to take 48 hours...do I need to continue to lower salinity through the night? Or do I just leave it where it is when I go to sleep and continue in the morning?
