Xenia safe from butterfly and angel?

In the wild most butterflies are notorious for nipping at coral in their natural diet. I checked in my book "Marine Fishes" by Scott W. Micheal and it says the dot-dash butterfly is not reef safe. However, in some cases in captivity you can get lucky and get the fish to aquire a new diet...

thx hub, By what you said I'm definately at the lower end toward the minimal circulation. I'm going to try what you said and order another power head. Water quality is good except Phosphates where a little high and alklinity was a little low. I bought a Phosphate reduction filter pad so...

OT: How is evryones tank doin?

thx log, that would make me think its phosphates. They were a little high last week and i just bought phosphate reducing filter pads. Hopefully that algae will start to decrease. I did use RO to fill the tank.

OT: How is evryones tank doin?

Same as logan and Krunk. How can you get rid of a small patch of the red slime algae? Is it caused by excessive nitrates? Lighting I've put on timers now so it can't be that.

    New tank

If you had 3 damsels in a 10 gallon tank it could have been a terratorial issue. Damsels are very terratorial and can kill each other. I've seen it happen.

Hey went to the LFS finally and got some fish, have some questions

actually I think I read a post on here a while back that you can buy or make a fish trap. That would probably be easier than having to move your live rock. I figured that you moved some water or something by the way you phrased that "cycle". Only time will tell if you have another spike...

Hey went to the LFS finally and got some fish, have some questions

I agree with Logan on the Damsels. If you want them out; it's a challenge. I still have two from my cycling and have decided they are in there forever. The cycle can take from two weeks to a month; it all depends on the tank. You'll see your NH3 go way up and then it will drop and your...

    Brand New Hobbyist

Hey Bonkuba, Welcome to the board. Be patient, read all you can and you'll find this hobby has ultra-rewards. As far as books go I recommend Marine Fishes and Reef Fishes by Scott W. Michael. They will give you quite a bit of information about most captive and aquarium species. i.e...

anyone heard of a flashlight fish?

Good point about the cost/benefit. I thought it would be quite unique when the lights are out, but it also says they do better with other nocternal fish. I'm going to need to research what other fish are nocternal. My other fish on my want list is a Chevron Tang I think. This hobby has...

    New SWF.com U-Build it!

I used to be the sameway, but then I realized livestock has to be shipped to the LFS somehow. When you buy at a LFS the livestock has to be aclimated to yet another tank w/ different conditions before it hits yours. That's my 2 cents on it anyhow

anyone heard of a flashlight fish?

My 92 gallon is almost done cycling and I'm planning way ahead in the future. I saw this cool fish on a website and was wondering if anyone has heard of it. The flashlight fish. It is bioluminescent so it glows and is mainly nocternal. Here are the stats. It's rather expensive, but I think...

    help

Hey Huck, If you arn't planning to have coral or anything photosynthetic such as anemonies you won't need the same high output lighting. You can use a standard lighting system. A sump is basically a device under the tank that your water drains into from your tank (most likely through an...
