What to run (or not run) during the cycle

A fish only tank is different lol......if it was up to me I would have a 40 gallon garbage can filled with blue bioballs. Instead I have an empty sump, void of any substance :-(

What to run (or not run) during the cycle

It is scary how much things have changed since my first tank roughly 20 years ago. Everybody had bioballs, nobody had refugiums, etc. So does that mean 20 years from now we will look back on what we are doing now and realize it was all wrong lol??

What to run (or not run) during the cycle

The problem is (unlike you, who stated that flower's way was correct along with yours) most successful aquarists online seem to believe their way is the only way, often stating that other successful aquarists are "doing it wrong". Unfortunately somebody new to the hobby doesn't have anything to...

What to run (or not run) during the cycle

Ok...I am doing it your way lol. I think that is the most frustrating part about this hobby (so far at least)...there is too much contradictory information. I just want the right and the wrong way to do things.....that doesn't seem to exist :-(

What to run (or not run) during the cycle

I am finally getting ready to start the cycle. It is unbelievable how many opinions there are in this hobby. No matter what I find out through research, the next post says the complete opposite lol. Anyways, I believe I have determined that I do not need lighting, the skimmer, GFO reactor, or...

    Mixing pump

lol yeah, I meant per hour. Ok, that answers my question. Thanks.

    Mixing pump

Is there any harm in using a Flotec utility pump (which I already have and was used to empty a pool) to mix saltwater and move it into the tank? It is 1/4 HP and will move over 1000 gallons a day. My concerns are that it will leak some contaminants into the water from the aluminum construction...

    Brand New 90 Gal Build

Ahhh, ok...I thought you were adding live rock.

    Brand New 90 Gal Build

Based on the research I have done (and have been told), the live rock is all that you need to start and complete the cycle. As it cures, the die-off creates all of the ammonia that is needed. The stand looks really good by the way :-)

    PVC return

I have finally ran all of the plumbing from my sump to the tank....now I need to decide on what type of PVC return. Is there any benefits to a spray bar vs. a nozzle return? I will be going from 1" PVC to 3/4" PVC either way with a DIY return. The spray bar would be submerged just under the...

Lots of questions about a new setup.

Quote:Originally Posted by SnakeBlitz33 1. No, I have successfully moved plenty of tanks, however, I have never moved it with sand still in the bottom. So... good luck, but I am 95% sure that you won't need to reseal it just because you moved it. 2. Yes, over time the base rock will be...

    Another newbie question....this time heaters.

My tank is 60 gallons with a Trigger Systems 30 sump. I have read that two heaters are better than one (which makes sense). I currently have one 100W heater from an old tank which I am not sure if it can be used. What size heaters should I be using if I wanted to use two in the sump? I know...

    Overflow return question

Hmmm....just when I think I have everything figured out. Well it appears that I am going to have to either 1) angle it down all the way from the overflow box to the sump (where possible), 2) break up the long runs by stepping down using extra 90 degree bends, or 3) use flexible hose (which I...

    Overflow return question

Is it safe to assume that the GPH ratings that are given to overflow boxes are based on the sumps sitting directly below the aquarium? I am concerned about my horizontal runs (One of 10' and two of 2'). When I am running the PVC from the overflow to the sump, should I stick to horizontal...

Beginning to cycle a new tank with tap water

I have filled all of my previous tanks with tap water and have had algae problems in every one :-( Can't say for sure that they were connected but I am not taking any chances this time.....I would definitely get some RO/DI water from Walmart.

ok...I will either make one out of PVC or buy one of the Loc-Lines.

    Researching equipment....need opinions

I understand what you are saying but we are talking about two different parts (or I am really confused lol). Aren't the "beaslbob traps" a replacement for the overflow? I am just talking about the return nozzle from the pump to the tank. If I was going to use the nozzle that I had, I would...

    Researching equipment....need opinions

Ok, thanks everybody...I think I have that portion figured out. One more quick question before I go and buy the plumbing parts tomorrow. I have a return from my old Rena/API canister filter that connects with vinyl tubing. Is that what is normally used or does everybody make their own out of...
