Algae Scraping

I have the same problem with trying to keep up with the green algae. I sometime use a plastic card, kind of like a credit card and it works really well to scrape the glass.

    premium fiji rock

You might try gulf-view. I got my last batch of rock from them and was very impressed with the their premium rock. Lots of live growth and color to it. http://www.gulf-view.com

    prized fish?

I really like my algae blenny. They should have been called "clownfish" Mine does things that can bring tears of laughter to my eyes. I'm not sure if he's braindead or just funny. :D

Is 5.3 watts per gallon too much.

Thanks all, just one not on the actinics, I had just the 100 watt MH but it was kind of yellow so when I put on the actinics it really whitened the light and made the tank look a lot better.

Is 5.3 watts per gallon too much.

I made a light hood for my 30L and put in one 100 watt MH and two 30 watt fl. actinics. The color looks great but, noticed a couple of the sponges were getting brown ( burned), so I moved the light up to 9" from the water. Am thinking about removing the MH and going with one 30 watt actinic and...

My cleaner shirmp won't come from under a rock

I've got a cleaner in two tanks and it took both a couple of days before they got adjusted to the new surroundings. It doesn't take long before they will be all over the tank and when you put your hand in they'll be all over it. I have found both of mine like the Kent Marine Reef Herbivore...

A friendly suggestion for the Moderators to consider....

I've only been a member for a couple of months now, and have found a wealth of information to help me get started. I do think a newbie forum of some kind would be a good idea though. It would get all of those "same" questions and answers in the right place and give the newbies a place to "get...

My last posting when screwy, so here we go again....just back from LFS

I agree with Predator, don't go with the Skilter. I bought a Skilter 400 to start out with and within 3 weeks, bought another filter and now have the Skilter I paid $60 for sitting on a shelf. The filter works OK, but didn't see much happening with the skimmer and it was so noisy, couldn't even...

Do emerald crabs get aggressive ???

About once a week I find one of my hermits dead and just laying out (not eaten) the shell is still there too. The only livestock in the tank is the cleaning crew which includes a cleaner shrimp and an emerald crab. So unless I have something in the liverock that comes out at night I figured...

    Prizm skimmer question

Try adjusting your water lever to just below the black o ring on the collection cup. I have to keep mine about a 1/4" below the O ring to keep it operating right. :D

Off Topic: What is Your Computer Choice

I think tigerdirect.com is about as good a place to buy both computers and other computer related items as anywhere. They are in Miami, but have warehouses other places for faster shipping. :)

    Salinity?????

I'm new to this hobby, but everything I've heard and read, would lead me to believe the 19 is too low. I have three tanks and keep all at 24. ;)

    Question

I posted a similar question recently and was told two things. To leave both filters running for at least a couple of weeks to get the bacteria built up in the new filter. And when taking the old filter out try to drain the old filter media into the new one. Hopefully, one of the more...

Since you live in Houston, find a Petsmart store near you and go there, they have a good selection of tanks and pretty good prices. They have 46 gal bow fronts too.

How do you clean a qt tank after velvet ?

I had a fish in a qt tank that had velvet. The fish didn't make it as it hit so fast, but am now a little leery of using the tank again without proper cleaning. I soaked everything in fresh water overnight, including filter media. Is that enough to get rid of any residual parasites.?

    live sand (dsb)

If you can snorkle out around the reef and get some sand I would think that would be great to use. If your just setting up the tank and using live rock as well, the tank will cycle and you'll be able to tell how well the sand is doing for you. Keep us posted as I'd like to know if it works out...

    First tank advice

I agree with Carrie, so you would probably be better of to go ahead and change over to ls now since you don't have any livestock in the tank and only a small amount of rock. That will make it a lot easier on you, and the sand will help to cycle the tank. Good luck

Swapping filters on the fly ?

Thanks, I'll use both methods and leave them both in for a couple of weeks, then dump the Skilter into the Emperor. :)
