Please help! Delivery scheduled for Wednesday @ 10AM.

I'm sorry missmyers, but IMHO it is a little too late to be asking the important question, "Is it too soon to introduce these corals?" when your delivery is already scheduled. It makes the quiry moot, don't you agree? I am honestly trying to be of some assistance. Corals cannot tolerate ammonia...

    Cleanup crew with DSB?

Well, Here I go again. Not everyone shares the above opinions of Dr. Ron, or are sooooo articulate ("wack","whack") expressing them. I am dissapointed that this type of bashing appears on what is supposed to be an informative forum. I completely agree that we should share our...

    NO Nitrates--None!

Hi Geoff and welcome to the board! DSB stands for Deep Sand Bed. To learn more use the search engine, there has been tons of posts on this subject lately. It will save these tired fingers (all two of them :D) from all that lightening speed typing. But if you should have any specific questions...

    NO Nitrates--None!

Thanks Darryl. I'm wondering if the macros aren't mopping up any nitrate that might be available. The growth is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch per day. You can almost see it grow. FWIW, the Cactus Stalk Halmedia is real attractive in a reef, and much easier to prune than some of the other macros...

    Sweet tank Grumpy Vet

Hi Grumpy, If you would provide a e-mail address I can direct you to a Seahorse site, and also a source for Nassarius snails (per another of your posts) that you are looking for. HTH Hermit

    NO Nitrates--None!

Hey all, Just thought I would share some good results for a change. Recently I changed to a DSB reef. In doing my bi-weekly test on Saturday, my nitrate test was clean, that is to say no nitrate at all! I even re-tested, then used 2 other test kits to see if I could get any results. I just...

where does one find a detrivore kit?

We can not post links on this BB. If, however, you supply an e-mail address, I would be happy to supply you with the markets for detrivore kits. There are basically two sources. Ideally, you should seed your tank with critters from both if you can. This way you get the very best biodiversity...

    New bulbs,WOW what a diference...

IT is my understanding, as a rule of thumb: If you have a coil and tar ballast, change every 6-8 months. If you have an electronic ballast, change every 12-18 months. To be on the safe side change at the lower end of these parameters. This is for VHO bulbs. HTH Hermit

    Pagoda Coral

If these corals were people, they would be the ultimate "lookie-loos". ;) I've had mine 6-7 months now. It was in my 7 year old 125 gal tank, in so many places and currents I lost were I put it half the time. Iy NEVER opened up. Not ever. And it continually slimed over. I thought it was a...

    Powerhead Question

I believe you are speaking of the Maxijet 1200's. If so, that should be sufficient as it gives you 16.8x turnover, and skimmer/and/or filtration would be additional. IMO Maxijets are the best. I highly recommend them. Additionaly, if you are ever to add a wavemaker, they are built to take the...

    WHICH ONE??

Well as everyone knows, I am the Prizms' biggest fan! :D So naturally I would recommend this skimmin' little scum sucker, to use your phrase Allan! ;) Also, FYI people: The Prizm Skimmer now comes with a 12 blade impeller, instead of the original 8 blade, making it much more quiet, they say...

    SAND

If you want the finest oolitic sand, and I do mean fine--it's like powder, go with ESV's oolitic. I needed 150 lbs and bought it directly from esvco (dot you-know-what). It came to be $.75 a lb with the shipping. I LOVE this sand, and it is highly recommended by Shimek. (I seeded my sand with...

    PC's vs VHO

TNReef, I sssoooooo agree with you. The livestock should not only be our main concern, but IMHO, our only concern. Instant gratification, in this hobby, is deadly. Thanks for your respect, the feeling is entirely mutual my friend. ;) (I think I need to up my milligrams of hormones to a higher...

    PC's vs VHO

Well I wasn't going to get any more involved in yet another lighting debate but...... :D I researched this subject for over three months, and talked to many experts personally, and I have to totally disagree that "the wonderful color of VHO is for our benefit and not the corals." If you can...

    PC's vs VHO

FWIW The new IceCap electronic ballasts are far more efficient than the old tar ballasts. They run cooler therefor extending the life of the bulbs to 12-18 months. The old ballasts ran hot and bulbs needed to be changed every 6-8 months. PC bulbs cost more to replace than the most expensive VHO...

I'm happy to hear you are lovin' your new lights Connie! :D I too had PC's. Sold them all and went with VHO. No comparision. Ditto everything coralbeauty stated. My .02 Hermit

    Lighting Suggestions ?

I agree with TNReef, Metal Halide with VHO support. IMHO VHO has much better color than PC. Whatever you do, do not try to cut corners or economize in this department. If your goal is a reef tank of that size, get the best lighting system . It will be the single most important investment you'll...

Anyone have any PC lighting they want to sell?

What size tank do you have? I have a Custom Sea Life Powder Coated Aluminum PC that holds one 65 watt smartlite for sale. I used it less than 4 months, and its still in the original box, like brand new. It's 24x6x4. Hermit

    Did I get took?

Not everyone knocks PC's. They are an excellent choice for some applications. I should know I had them. HAD them. I now have VHO and there simply is NO COMPARISON on MY application. Yes, there is a difference. Hermit
