    Green Hair Algae Questions

Do you use any additives for food or otherwise? What and how much do you feed?

    Green Hair Algae Questions

First, thank you for your service and as a result, sacrifices, for the security of the rest of us. The least of these, I suspect, was your tank. Hopefully we can get that on track. A picture would help. LR does tend to accumulate detritus, and so it is good to understand the diversity of...

Anyone Have a White Faced Tang!

People very well have it, but more commonly IME it is called a gold rim or powder brown tang. The three names (actually along with white cheek, 4 names) are commonly confused between 2 different species of very similar looking fish. This is why common names are often useless. I believe on this...

Newbie to Saltwater, with lots of questions

I am afraid, though, one of the first let downs for new hobbyists is realizing that you can't always keep the fish you wish to keep. A Dogface puffer (even one...let alone more) are not suitable for that tank size, and are aggressive. So IMO even one would max out the tank, and not be...

    About to fire my CUC

Adding another fish will frequently not resolve the ultimate cause of your algae, and I strongly encourage you to figure that out before just adding something. What is your nitrate, phosphate level? How old is the tank? Many tanks naturally go through this stage and then it dies off. In older...

    weird drop in gravity...

The only way to have a change (a drop in specific gravity) is by adding freshwater...in particular more freshwater being added than was lost by evaporation alone. If you notice you need to be topping off more than usual, you may have a leak somewhere in your system causing saltwater to be...

    Predtor Reef Tank

Oh, this is an interesting thing. triggers are some of the few fish really well designed to eat urchins, and it is quite fascinating to see. First it is thought in some regards that their eyes being so far behind their mouth allows them "through" the spines if you will. Triggers are quite...

    Forum Suggestion

I think that we have a couple of forums that are rarely visited low volume forums and that there is a risk that we would further subdivide the topics. People post in those forums and then have to go post in another "general" one (like New Hobbyists) to get answers. Those big forums get the...

    Predtor Reef Tank

Many triggers are natural predators of inverts...just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't regardless of how well fed it is. So seastars, brittlestars, snails and shrimp are at risk, obviously less so with certain species than others. The bigger issue, IMO, is water quality so you...

    Help Fish Dying

The sand sifter is not a surprise, IMO...the peak mortality in fish death is 48-72 hours after addition (this is when, for example, and LFS sees peak losses in new fish). It is why it is critical to know how long the fish was at the LFS and whether it was eating. But even then, to have it die...

    My calcium wont come down??

Heck, other soft corals can kill corals. Esp if you have some large sinularia or something. I have a very difficult time keeping other types of coral in the tank with big sinularia's. Very toxic. So any number of things can be the culprit.

    Fish Hiding

68 degrees is rather chilly, IMO...why so low? How long has the tank been cycled? Watch closely for ammonia with adding such large fish.

    My calcium wont come down??

If you are keeping SPS corals, in particular, you need to invest in something much better than the strips :( I wouoldn't make any adjustments - additives or otherwise - until you have a better one. You may not really have any issue at all.

two minor questions.....hope you can help

If you bought all of these fish at an LFS, and they willingly sold it to you, I am afraid you have a very bad one. Many of these fish are not suitable for your tank. But in the end, the panther grouper will eat them all... Do not use ammo lock. A tank with a decent biological filter should...

    Help Fish Dying

When fish die overnight after a new introduction - that may have nothing to do with the tank. It may just be the way it is. That could go back to how long they were at the LFS before purchase, etc. The critical distinction to make is whether these were fish you had, say a year, and then...

    Dwarf angel in 29g?

What people take for granted with these angels, like large angels, is that they cruise a great deal around live rock and contstantly nibble. A lot of live rock for grazing is really important. I have a smallish coral beauty in a 45g and can't imagine him in anything smaller (it is a 3 foot...
