What is everyone useing for chemicals in thair reef tanks

Large reef tank owners only please!

You really must do a full QT on anything going in. Beyond that you are in the garlic stage, though additional prevention - by not overstocking and maintaining ideal water quality and diet is also important.

    Big Sale...What to get??

Definitely do not add more than one or 2 small fish at a time or you will be in big trouble with the tank, IMO. How did you cycle it? what are your parameters? How much LR do you have? How old is the tank? If the tank is under 3 months, then I would not add more than 1 fish. Is this a 36 "...

Fishless for over 2 months, now what?

I would treat the tank as though it has fish in it, which is not leaving silversides or pouring pure ammonia in the tank. All you are trying to do is ask "if I add a fish, will I get an ammonia spike." If you push the tank hard now, it may well cycle...though much reduced in overall time. It...

What do you think about a barracuda?

The barracuda does not "appear" to be an aggressive fish. Frankly, nor do sharks. Its not like they all swim around attacking everything. Barracuda are ambush attack predators. They lurk and wait, and typically are predatory at twlight (dawn and dusk), though other opportunities won't be...

Fishless for over 2 months, now what?

If you do not QT, it is all for nothing. Any fish, even if it looks clean, can have ick. Also, I would ghost feed your tank at least a week before adding anything again (but since you will QT your fish, it will be another 6 weeks before you add anything). But the bacteria will die back in the...

    bamboo hatching

If you haven't tried it already per the PMs, please get squid and cut only the tips of the tentacles. Take a bamboo skewer and put a tentacle on the end, and basically wiggle it right under his nose. I've raised a lot of hatchling sharks and this has worked very well in the overwhelming...

Mandarin or scooter blenny in a nano

How nano of a nano and with what other fish? In general I would not do this as just behaviorally they do tend to move and "hunt" a lot. It is better to give them a larger space. They are also not particularly small fish in the end. So while it may make it possible to keep them in a "larger"...

    Asterina Starfish, your thoughts?

yes... BTW, the reality is in most smallersystems sandsifter stars do starve, and you never know there are issues until the disintegrate. So save the "they're fine" for 18 months + And maybe they will be, but it doesn't mean the speaches are wrong....

    can i use this

If it is the rock I see on a google search, then no. You do not want to use granites, slate, etc in a saltwater tank. You can buy cheap limestone rock (aka Holey rock) that is much better and is usually only $1 or so a pound. Also you can make your own rock with cement (see DIY). You want...

pH went from 8.2 to 7.8 in a month.

In order to understand this, you need an alkalinity and calcium reading. You did take the reading when it would be lowest...you should take one later in the day as noted. Do not add any buffers to change this until you know your alk and calcium...it is in simple times at least a 3 part chemistry...

Anyone Have a White Faced Tang!

The typical white face tang that I think people would think of is Acanthurus japonicus and looks like a powder brown/gold rim/powder blue etc in shape. So perhaps it is something else like the "palelipped" tang Acanthurus leucocheilus That closer to the shape?

    Green Hair Algae Questions

Are the red areas also an algae? So, definitely a bit of an issue there I do get concerned in older tanks once biodiversity drops. Do you have a local reef club? Possibly another thing to consider is an urchin, like a blue tuxedo (but not a slate pencil). A sea hare is an option - but they do...
