You should be able to keep softies and easier corals. Maybe an anemone if its a relatively easy one. 8 hours a day sounds pretty good. If you don't have any algae problems then you could extend it a little.

Get as much bacteria holding items in there as you can, such as live rock, live sand, etc.

Metal Halides are the way to go! I have 2x175w halides in my 55 gal and I love them. They make my tank look much more natural. 1x175 should do for your tank and that would allow you to keep whatever you wanted.
