    The Mystery of Goniopora

NM, Thanks for the link, I found it very interesting, and I am sure that it is probably correct.

    The Mystery of Goniopora

blondenaso1, I am aware of a guy in the Cleveland Ohio area (Strongville) that has had success with them. He was having minor nitrate problems last time I was there, which did not seem to affect them. He used the GARF method, or was in keeping his tanks. He even fragged one, and both pieces...

has my tank cycled in a week?

As mentioned above, you should have had some kind of spike. Did you ever have any spikes at all? I would be leary about adding anything yet, give it another few weeks and continue doing tests. If you had the spikes, and now the test results are zero, then things may be ok.

Red mushroom fell off, what to do?

It is still alive, you can wedge it between 2 rocks or place it in a low current are. It will be fine. The gray string things usually show up when you irritate or mess with them.

    DSB negatives

I had a 80 gal. tank up for over 8 years with an undergravel filter, and about 1-2" of crushed coral. The last 2 years I quit cleaning the CC, and the nitrates were less than 20. (When I was cleaning the gravel monthly, they were around zero.) I switched it over to a DSB last month. I ran a...

    OT: What's Your Favorite Quote/Saying?

Profanity is the sign of a limited mind trying to express itself boldly.

    Not a good night!

I agree that the ammonia and nitrates are contributing to your problem. But I would not clean the substrate if you have a DSB. If you are feeding your fish every day and choose to do so, cut back on the amount you are feeding them, or go to every other day. Before even thinking about a...

Death of the Coral Reef in the Fla Keys

Interesting post. Writing goverment officials could be the worst thing possible. If you try to ban the harvesting of live rock, fish, coral or any other thing we wish to have in our tanks, it will most likely be the doom of our hobby. The easiest way for the government to stop these practices...

Is their any automated way to monitor a thread?

Ed R, If you really want to keep track of a thread, then bookmark/add it to your favorites. Then you can find it when you want to. Delete it when you are done.

    DSB

I just changed mine over to a DSB 2 weeks ago. I took everything out, cleaned the tank, rinsed the sand(I used Southdown) and put the sand in. Then I covered the sand with aluminum foil. I put some small rocks on top of the foil to keep it in place, and then added the water(at the proper...

    Fragging Question?

It is actually better to use a razor blade and make 1 swift cut then a sharp pair of scissors, but either will work.

    I finally did it.

NM Reef, I will be 49 this Friday, so I have one more year before I am an old dog... I started with saltwater when I was in my early to mid teens with dwarf seahorses, and have tinkered with it ever since. The past few years, I just did routine water changes, and did not even buy any books or...

    Feeding branching frogspawn?

Kris, I do not feed mine either, and it seems to be doing fine and has done so for a few years. So I agree with 10K, if anyone knows differently, let us know.

    I finally did it.

I decided to upgrade my main tank to a DSB. It has been up about 11 years running an undergravel filter and crushed coral. Nitrates were just starting to register about 5-10, so I thought why not... I started the job this morning, and just put the rock back in a few minutes ago. Next comes...

"Regular Lights" on a Reef tank

I would not recommend regular lights. I am assuming you mean the type that fits in a lamp(incandescant). Wattage is not the answer to reef aquariums by itself. You need the proper light spectrum, and intensity. Many people refer to WPG, but forget to tell you the WPG without the right...

    Couple more questions...

Sharon, As for the trees, my 1st guess would be aptasia, a type of anenome the can be a nusiance, and spread very rapidly. Have they multiplied as of yet? If they start to multiply fairly quickly, that is most likely what you've got. How big are these trees? Do they respond by either pulling...
