    algae problem

josh - skimmer: berlin turbo fuge - about 10 gallon the corraline - I don't care what color, I just want more Now the big problem - algae: I started with a brown dusting on the sand. (I figured diatoms) then it turned darker green. As of this morning it was getting hairy (so I figured hair...

    algae problem

also, going skimmerless is easier if you have a refugium with macros to take the NO3 outta the water... the macros will get a lot of NO3 this way and grow fast... there seems to be a threshold to NO3 uptake by macros... therefore keeping them trimmed and allowing them to "regrow" will continue...

    algae problem

I was just reading the post about corraline algae, and saw that it is possible to run skimmerless. Here's my deal: tank about 5 months old have a fuge have a sump no fish yet you can see all my livestock in my sig. I do add some squid once a week to feed all the inverts amm -0 trites -0 trates...

    Southdown Sand

Southdown tropical playsand has the name southdown on the bag. You should not clean it. You will "skim" off the fine grain sand that is so good for your tank. If there is already water in the tank, then use a PVC tube (approx. 1 - 2 inches in diameter and pour the sand through that into the...

    instant ocean prob...

What kind of residue, and how thick was the milk? Usually there is a "milky" look to a tank as the bacteria does it's first big bloom. Has your tank cycled? I think your probably seeing the bacteria spawn. As for the residue I'm not really sure. You'd need to describe it some. Also, have...

    Aggresive

Completely OT... Hey S.A. Boy, I see you're from SA. -duh- Whereabouts? As you can see from my avatar, I'm rather attached to your country. I'm glad to see someone from over there has a tank. I might have to stop by next time I'm in SA. I usually miss when I travel abroad. Last time I was...

    featherdusters continued...

Earlier I posted that my featherduster lost it's feathers. Well, I just came home from the movies and the whole worm was laying on the sand getting picked at by a shrimp. I decided to take it out, and noticed all these "flea" type bugs crawling around on it!? I haven't added any live sand to...

    feather dusters are featherless

    1) So I shouldn't worry about it not being able to eat? 2) Is this normal? 3) Thanks for the quick response.

    feather dusters are featherless

I come downstairs this morning to find one of my feather duster's feathers floating in the tank! Does this mean it's dead? I'm going to test my water param.s now. BTW, the other feather I have is fully extended like normal, and a little baby duster is out too.:(

    Help

Broomer5 - as I was reading your post on aerating the water, it got me thinking. Bang Guy replied to one of my posts about adding Ca saying I should drip my water into the skimmer intake. In an emergency, couldn't you add the new saltwater mix into the skimmer intake as well? I'd assume this...

    Kinds of Clean up crews?

First, do you have a lot of algae for them. I wouldn't want you to get a full cleanup crew and have them starve to death. In conjunction, I know that firefishspike suggested nudibranches. I really wanted one, but I've heard that after they eat all the algae, they tend to starve to death - so...

    User Names?

fulcrum - very funny, my departments motto is "smarter not harder" As for my name, my mothers a speach therapist, and I'm sick of looking at all her hooked on phonics boxes in the house. I really wanted to go with grasshopper, because I was named after David Carradine's character in Kung Fu...

    ph craziness

Thanks alot Bang Guy. I will drip into skimmer intake from now on. Any thoughts on the bubble coral issue? And, if my alk is out of whack, what should I do? Thanks.

    ph craziness

I've been monitoring my tank for a while now and decided I needed more calcium. It was hovering at 350. So I read all of boomer5's info on calc, alk & ph. I also read other posts on calc. and decided I would try dosing with Kalkwasser. I mixed up 5 gallons worth and let stand overnight. The...

    moonlight

You'll need a soldering iron and some solder, and the following: 2600 MCD blue LEDs. rated 20 - 30 mA. a 4.5 V power supply which produces 700 mA. 40 ohm resistors (1 per LED) put the LEDs in parallel, and the resistor on the negative wire of each light. and tape O----|----|----|----|----|...

    fans to cool tank down

FYI, the fans DVS talked about are great for cooling lighting. I have two of them for my lighting, but the water was still running around 83-84. I really wanted it at 80. Chillers are a great solution. Unfortunatley they're expensive, and take up space. If you have money and space go for...

    moonlight

I put together some moonlighting using 6 LEDs and other stuff from Radio Shack. As with all things it couldn't have been done without help from my friends here at swf.com. If you want me to give you directions and a diagram just let me know. The only skill you'll need is soldering and taping...

    clownfish with ick

OK, this is probable a no-no, but I have to ask the question- If I have a cleaner shrimp (which from what I understand cleans parasites like ick) why can't I put the two clownfish I have into my main tank with the cleaner? A little history: I do have a QT tank where the clownfish are. I bought...

    Water Changes

For those of you who do not do a water change: When you add livestock, don't you somehow acclimate the new organism using your current tank water? If so then you have to replenish the water with new saltwater. Thus doing a Very small water change. Do I have this correct? Or do I acclimate...
