what color changes are you talking about? in the fish, water, sand? i would check specifically the nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, salinity, and Ph. there are others that you can check for as your tank matures but those will be the main ones for now.

mine did not pay any attention to the bubble tip or the carpet that i put in my tank. finally the crazy clown picked my colt coral to host in. he wont leave it for anything. lol never can predict what those crazy clowns are going to do.
