see if you can find an attachment for the 1700 to disperse the water flow alittle so its not so concentrated. I know what you mean when you say it seems to strong. I have one and put it in my tank and water ended up on the floor when i turned it on lol

a sump isnt a kind of filter at all. It is just used to hole your equipment like your skimmer etc...i would recomend making the 30 a refugiem(sp?) that would be the best for a reef. With a 135 gallon though you should probably get a bigger tank like a 55 gallon so that you can make it part sump...

use a tripod and put it on the highest iso....should help

i have a huge on that is meant for a constuction site that cost like $70 but A) it as saved my life and B) It doesnt trip quite as easy since it is designed for bigger laods so when the power goes out it never trips. But yeah i hada close call before i got it(water dripping into a power strip)...

no base rock will never be true lr(there are some chemical differences and things like that)... but yes it is going to be cheaper.
