    LR question

Thats kinda what I was figuring. Now how do I go about reseeding it and seeding the sand. I got 90lbs of the argonite (i think thats the name) reef sand. It wasnt live, it came dry. The LFS sells live sand by the pound. Should I get some? If so how much, and then what about the rock? Will...

    LR question

The 90 is in the process of being up and running. I filled with water on Sunday, sand on Monday, old rock on Wednesday and then the new base rock yesterday. Have to wait 2 weeks for fresh live rock. I'm in no hurry to get livestock, I figure I got about 4 to 6 weeks after the next round of...

    LR question

I have been topping it off with saltwater to keep the rocks submerged, I havetn had a heater going so the tank has sat at room temp (about 72 degrees). I havent tested anything, the salinity has been somewhat constant, it hasnt been perfect but it has stayed within the "acceptable range"...

    LR question

I just bought a 90 gal and am in the process of setting up a reef tank. This is a big step and I want to do it right. I had a 29 up for almost 5 years. In January, we ahd a huge ice storm and I lost power for 6 days. Lost all of my livestock as the tank dropped to 40 degrees. Since then...

a few simple clarification of saltwater terms...

SLOW DOWN. You have 5 posts going at the same time, all saying the same thing. YOUR GOING WAY TO FAST!!! 1st) let your tank cycle, slow down on the water changes, do not stop them completly, but abotu 10% once a week should be ok through the end of your cycle. 2nd) once the cycle...

nitrate is perfect nitrite is dreadful help!

Hey man, sorry to hear about your losses. Can't say I havent made the same mistakes myself, but we live and we learn. IMO, you went way to fast. Always check tank levels before taking a trip to the LFS, in fact I always test, and bring a small ammount of water and let the LFS test as well...

Can I nuke my RO water?

Its the same basic principles if the water your heating has any additives in it. Most people dont realize that when you microwave, you change ionic charges in particles. You may be canceling the effect of the DI in the RO/DI. But I'm not sure.

Can I nuke my RO water?

"Microwaving baby formulas converted certain trans-amino acids into their synthetic cis-isomers. Synthetic isomers, whether cis-amino acids or trans-fatty acids, are not biologically active. Further, one of the amino acids, L-proline, was converted to its d-isomer, which is known to be...

Can I nuke my RO water?

If you are microwaving just the water, I would think it would be fine, I wouldn't heat all of it, perhaps half, if there is any additive in the water I would not avoid the microwave at all costs. Too much microwave can start to cause changes in some of the chemical compounds in salt and what not.

    Boring Rock

I am in the same boat. With a 30 gal tank and the plastic top / ballist that comes with the tank, lighting choices are very limited. I found a 20,000K, 20watt bulb from Coralife. Its supposedly meant for deep water and inverts. Its has this bluish tint to it, and since I have had it in...

Water change / Top Off HELP

Ok, so I seem to have a ton of evaporation in my tank, its a 30 gal, and I seem to be putting about 3 gals of water a week in just to top it off. I have dry blower heat in my house and the tank loses water like crazy. I have been wondering what to do in regards to water changes. I know the...

    Powerhead Maintence

Very cool, great ideas. Thanks guys. I think I know what the magnets your all talking about are. They are similar to the magnets they sell to clean the tank. I never really thought about that cause of the price, but I guess at 4$ a pop for the suction cups, 12$ for a magnet is like 6 months...

    How does this look

Thanks for the love. Its good to know I am doing things right. A lot of the rock came from a giant 30# piece. I broke it up and dry fit it all before I cycled the tank. I chiseled out some pieces for rock to fit to make that little cave in the bottom. I have a black backing but I have been...
